Way back in 2000/2001 I visited Footloose on a family outing.. This was before I really started fishing 'full time'. We had great success catching several large blue kurper and one biggish trout.
Yesterday I returned with my fishing partner zucas922 and my girlfriend Melanie, the idea to get some of those big blues on the ultralight rigs.
Melanie kicked off proceedings with 3 cute basslets, the boys were watching tv...
things went quiet and we moved around from dam to dam... We saw some medium blues chilling on the surface but they just watched our Hornets and 0's zoom, twitch and flick past
Next thing I know I'm VAS!!! BUMP BUMP BUMP!!
oh damn HKGK!! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ across to the other side of the pond in 5 seconds.. lol I gave chase and ended up bailing and kapping my shin and knee on something hard (the ground I guess, too busy following fish to care!!)

The first 3 seconds I thought perhaps I had my big blue, but after sprinting so far and then blowing bubbles I assumed it was a barbel...
Then I got a glimpse of its back and .. what?? Its a carp?!
ON A CRANKBAIT???! I had been throwing a salmo hornet 2s in that sorta beige colour with the dark stripe on top...
And then it all made sense!!
bugger was hooked in its rather large tail!
Now at this stage if we had a net we could have landed it... but we didnt and the sides were very steep so once it got near it dug down and powered off into the deep...
after half an hour Zucas was able to organize a landing net from one of the specimen guys
An hour after hookup I made myself comfortable
I would bring the fish to the dropoff and it would engage low range 4x4 and power off in a cloud of mud... over and over again... It would then surprise us again and make another sprint across to the opposite bank... after 5 or 6 surprise sprints the stamina was fading and zucas was able to FIIIINALLY net it for me
and there it was, 6.4kg's of very fit carp..total fight time 1h15
tackle I used was a daiwa megaforce UL rod (1-4 gram), shimano sedona 1000 reel and 5lb XX mainline
After lunch we were back at it, baits in too.. Crickets, fish bait and the mixed dough stuff they had for sale all out... Not a touch on anything
Melanie then did it again! She was stalking a patch of flies on the water and cast past them and went VAS! it was a small fish but a decent specimen of a Vlei Kurper.. her first ever!

Also note this was her first time ever fishing this facet of casting lures in freshwater so I am very proud of her for out-fishing the boys by at least double the total amount of fish caught...
zucas and I managed to scratch out a small bass each but that was all...
I stupidly left the cars lights on but the friendly and helpful staff at Footloose organised jumper cables and a jump for us!
As for the venue, I dont think it is worth fishing there out of trout season unless you are a carp angler...
The bass were minuscule and the barbel in the photos very thin.I'll be back for trout
