I'm new to the forum so pardon any ignorance. I'm off to my very first attempt at landing tiger on fly. Been doing the reading and research. Question: Where does one get the piano wire? Should I be heading to the tackle shop or the music instrument shop?

Just as new to the Sealine site..,From what i know and stand to be corrected.., Piano Wire is just another name for Steel trace..,most tackle shops should stock it. Also Known/sold as American Piano Wire..!

Hey Guys. Thanks for the info. Off to tackle store and not instrument store during the week!

Not taking part in Jozini Tiger Compo... not even cast a fly to a tiger yet! But the future holds promise...!

Here is how to make the trace.

First you need the ingredients
- No. 5 Stainless Steel wire (About 250mm long)
- Small power swivel
- Small split ring

Note: I am using size 10 wire for the tutorial so it can be seen better in the pics.

With a pair of Round Nose pliers form a loop until the wire and tag are perpendicular to each other to start forming the haywire twist.

The loop should look like this with a large loop on the lure side (To allow fredom of movement) and a smaller loop on the swivel side (To reduce bubble trail).

Grab the loop with a pair of sharp nosed pliers and hold it tight.

Begin the twist making sure that BOTH wire and tag are being twisted.

Then do 3-4 twists.

Then you must bend the tag wire perpendicular to the main wire and the twist.

Then wrap the tag end 4-5 times around the main wire.

When done trim with side cutters and squash the sharp end down with pliers to make it neat and to avoid you figers getting hurt. The completed Haywire twist should look like this.
You do the exact same on the other side inserting the swivel into the loop before performing the Haywire twist.

Attach the split ring to the open loop.

The completed trace will look like this and is 150mm long.

Attach split ring to lure be it spinner, spoon, jig head or jerk bait.

The same trace can be use for bait, just insert a hook in theopen loop instead of a split ring

AWESOME INFO MAN...!! Have been searchin the net for the ''Haywire twist'' with NO sucsess..,and way behold there it is...!!

GREAT to have ..,will ''borrow '' this from you for the upcomin event in Jozini...

Would this trace not interfere with swimming action of say Rapala lures..? Do you connect the haywire twist straight onto the lure or still use your split rings..??

Nic fish there.

I prefer the split ring because it makes changing lures so easy. No this does not interfere with the lures swimming action. You can also tie the wire to the line using an albright knot, but this is not as strong as the tiny swivel and not much smaller either.

The swivels I use are the Centro 80llbs which are tiny and strong.

It is important to keep the wire short.
