Not bad at all Ignoblis! This is a fairly big spoon; do you plan to use this on the light tackle outfit of yours?

HG,

I have not weighed it yet but estimate it to be between 2 and 2.5 onces perfect for my Heavier Light rig. I have had that blank I told you about built up and it can throw between 1 - 3 Ounces. I am Gearing up for the big one during the srdine run on light tackle.

Well Guys I poured my first spoon last night. It is still a bit rough and will have to play around with the mould so as to let the air escape better but not bad first time.

A bit rough?  A bit out of focus ::jest

Great Post Harold,

I have been trying to get my hands on proper white metal spoons for a number years now and have tried various retailers in Gauteng with varied success.

I eventually came to the conclusion that I must try and make my own and your post have given me the info needed.

Now to see if my uneducated DIY brain and hands can do this

Impressive post- What are your reasons for the differant hook configerations on your spoons and if one had to use a spoon amongst the rocks what technique would be best so as not to lose your spoon.

I was amazed to see the high quality of the spoons made using this method by a fellow sealiner!  So there's definitely hope!

Hi Shawshank - Treble hooks alter the action of a spoon causing it to drag somewhat so I prefer to use single hooks unless I'm using a big spoon. As far as the single hooks are concerned I would use one single for a small spoon and two for a bigger one. The singles I would place back to back but let the ends overlap unlike the one in the picture. Hope this helps.

This is great , i checked out this post , made a couple of modifications , to my moulds , sorta hard to put in a curved inside of the spoon but are posible , I've used my spoons with great success , yellowtails, and snoek  tend to love the longer thinner models , casting from the beach you can slowdown your retreive [slower action for cobs ]My old man whipped out his bag of tricks to show me some ooolder models , also ive check som of my old spinners Ashley read spoons , mini rounds ect ect , the next mi9ssion to Vema We will see what happens

The problem with the smaller spoon they are to light , well being lead this issues are also resolved , light spinning an pinning here we come !

maximum thanx! :sec:sec::slo::slo::slo

In the old days the Indians ( Gillie Fisherman ) made their own spoons from a mix of the following.

Lead
Tin
White Metal

The majority of the mix when melting was lead...about 60 % and the spoons were cheap to make...they did however go dark when not used and one then has to scrape them with a knife to get the shine back...but these days you can spray them with a clear laquer...keeps the shine on

I have several of these spoons and they work a treat.

I use pure tin, it has the shine. All the spoons you buy at kingfisher are pure tin.
Easy to come by, but expensive. Well, not so expensive if you making your own spoons.

My latest secret!

That table spoon will work as well as any out there.

Now take two spoons, lay them inside one another, drill the holes and split ring them together. They will chatter when you drag them through the water.

To up your efficiency by about 50%, get some halographic paper from Maizey plastics (1790 confetti) and stick on the inside of the spoon. That shine drives prey fish crazy.

Twiggz - sorry for the late reply... I just stumbled upon your post now. I don't have a tried and tested solution for you but some ideas. Firstly the spoons I've made do not need to be chromed as you just need to shine the tin/white metal spoons. I have tried to epoxy copper and brass onto spoons with limited success. I do know of someone who had a complete spoon dipped in copper at a processing plant and then scraped off the bits he didn't want. If I'm correct in assuming that you will be making spoons in lead then coating them in chrome/brass/? then you may have to go the route of the chap with the copper spoon. I am researching ways of painting lead spoons with various glow in the dark colours which you may want to do as well?

Let me know how it goes?

Regards

Harold
