Hello All,

Planning a day trip for the wife and me this Saturday, just thought i would try some where new. Spent way to much work time on the net doing research, but even on sealine, there are only old out dated reports.

Please give me some current info, which of the three would be better and if there are other places to consider, i'm open for suggestions. As my name says "miellie chucker" i'm a conventional carp angler.

looking forward to your reply's.

I have only been to R50 Dam and didnt like the place at all. It is way too small.
I would suggest Heia Safari Ranch situated in Muldersdrift.
Parking right next to the water and the toilets are a short walk away.
There are animals on the property and the Zebras almost always come and pay you a visit at the waters edge looking for a snack. There are also giraff, springbok, rooibok, blue wildbeest etc.
Only thing is you cannot braai so you will have to bring something along that has been prepared at home.
Lots of carp and yellowfish. I would even recommend sitting as far left as possible...
Anyway, hope you find a spot and get something on the other end!

Hello,
thanks for the quick reply.
I have heard about that place, also read on the web site that you need gear for specimen carp fishing.I do use a keep net, catch and release and take all the care to keep fish wet while i unhook and weigh. Do you think they will have a problem?

Hi guys...

I guess this is another topic of diferent strokes for different folkes... I can garuntee you that each and every single angler on this forum would have a different outlook on these spots.

Out of the 3 mentioned in the original post, I would definately say R50 dam. Its a nice venue, close to town with shade and ablution facilities for the wife. The fishing is also not to bad, once again with every angler having a different secret weapon and tactic for the dam.

Both Carp crazee and myself have done reports on the R50 dam after the long weekend in August. I fish the venue a lot, and can vouch that the flavours mentioned in our different reports wil still produce fish.

Best of luck for the trip, and tight lines!

Heia Safari do not look at equipment as it is not a pure specimen venue irrespective of what the website says. You will be absolutely fine. I absolutely love Heia Safari and apparently they have some huge cats too...

Great news and I really hope you like it!
I usually sit about 200m from the far left, right next to a little pump house. In the morning/afternoon the pump house serves as shade if you dont have a gazebo. This section is not very deep at all. If you require deeper sections then I think you better sit closer to the dam wall, but I have not fished that section before...
When I papgooi, i use single mielies accompanied with wit deegie as backing or a floatie.
I find the further you fish the better the results.
I have also heard that carp have started to spawn all over so you might struggle with good size fish.
Might be worth targetting a cat or two as I have heard of monsters and they are on the bite.
Get there as early as you can as the gates are always open. It does get a bit busy in the summer.
Trust youll like it!

Morning,

Just a report back on the days fishing at Heia safari,
Got there early and set up near the dam wall. Got the carp rods in and decided to play around with the wife's bass rod.
Action almost right away, hooked what i can judge "would" have been my PB, twice! Didn't land either, frisky buggers, but a great fight. around 8 the wind came in and continued to pump the whole day :(. We left around 2, with no carp to show, but I blame the wind. I will be back, hoping tomorrow, if the weather improves.

Ja this weekend's weather was bad! I have not tried the bass there before but it is supposed to be an okay venue for them.
Anyhows, seems you liked it otherwise you wouldnt go back...
