Fishing St Lucia Cape vidal

Is it something you find in general from the leeries or just this season?
Maybe water temp or fish condition?
I've found the cold water fish tend to fight much harder, more oxygen, and given that this is probably towards the northern extent of the leeries range they may not be as game as in more temperate waters?

Free swimming bait fish means there is no sinker. so nothing to drag along the bottom of the ocean floor nothing to enhance the fight.
What we have seen is that they tend to feed and then when something goes wrong, they end up in the shore break and then it is too late.
Both garricks on free swimming bait did not even run out to the back line.
Both stayed in the 160 to 220 meter range, which is before the backline in st lucia.
Its like your bait is sitting in a rip with a light pull to it.
Then you would start reeling your baitfish in, i just do it slowly as i want to see its condition.
When your baitfish reaches the lip, then only does the garrick wake up and see there is a problem.
With a slight drag.....the garrick is in the wash and its all too late.
Next up is on its side and out onto the beach.
I will deal with tackle etc, and why i do certain things.
But a gut hooked garrick on steel and stainless steel hook will possibly not make it.

Yeah an elf with a circle in the back works well..Elf swim free of structure unlike mullet...if targetting leeries just use a lighter leader, on a 10-11foot spinning rod, if a toothy critter takes your bait he just bites you off and you can still get sporting fights with a leerie. Yeah small leeries we target them on very light gear, 20-30lb braid..Off the boat I use a 6ft tigerfish rod and a 3000 reel..LOL..

Hi everyone, I was thinking of heading down to St Lucia/Sodwana area during the end of Nov/beginning of Dec time. I haven't been to that part of KZN in years and just wanted to find out how the safety has been lately on the beaches of that area. For context if I do end up going it will probably just be myself and the misses. Is there a need to try get others involved to come with for the trip? Any feedback on how it's been lately would be much appreciated. Thank you.
