have you guys seen the Advertorial in the current december 2013 edition of the bank angler, Pg 68

titled: western accessories get the truth out of carp rods?

seems like it a bashing of "sensation oval dc" where the jackel vortex, waft black stalion, shimano, technium, waft bullet they all out cast the sensation oval dc.

they are putting out a challenge to rod builders and distributers for a stand off to take place in jan some time.

my thoughts are that seeing that its a paid for advertorial yusuf one can say any thing he wants to say ,

also makes me wonder if all the stuff around the oval dc is just hype? cause if those rods can perform better than the oval dc why pay al that extra money for nothing?

unless westerns is scared of the competition and is trying to change public view in their favour?

does any one have any comment on this article? im really interested to have some of your views

thanks

Different strokes for different folks.

It's not always the rod that casts further it's often the angler, casting style, reel, line and rig being cast.

If I had a Raging Bull II and I cast against Johan Beukes using a Purglas 400/1 I would lose and if I then took the 400/1 and gave him the Raging Bull he would hammer me again.

It's not always about which rod is the strongest or casts the Furtherst it is more which rod suites your style better.

Some rods are better suited to casting big baits and other better suited to casting smaller rigs.

I fish the Oval DC and I am very happy with the rod and it suites my style of fishing and I cast far enough to catch fish with it.

My Provincial league partner fishes Raging Bull II's and it is an awesome rod, very light and responsive. He still doesn't outcast me and if we swap rods he still won't outcast me.

My SA's Peg Partner fishes Blue Marlin 13' G2's and he outcasts me with the M0 and M1 but I outcast him with th 3 and 4oz rigs. That suites him because he doesn't cast 3 and 4oz rigs.

Pricing......

Oval DC R1800 fitted with Fuji Alconite Guides (to fit these to one of your rods will cost you R750 incl labour) so that and a Graphite Fuji seat makes up 40% of the cost of the rod and beyond Argument Fuji are world leaders in rod components.

Raging Bull II with 1 tip R2350 and with 2 tips over R3k (speaking under correction but that was what my buddy informed me when he took them out at the last comp.

As for the Technium, maybe once modified from it's current configuration. The Protea Carp team were casting at more than one location and the guys who use both Technium and Oval DC got the best range on the DC with the Specimen rigs.

The best way to settle the matter, if it is that important would be to get a single caster....... (ie. Francois Pienaar, SA Caster) one not sponsored, affiliated or employed by the rods under scrutiny.

Get a standard reel and line setup for each rod (same reel and line per rod)

2 Standardised rigs to cast per rod ie a golf ball and a 3oz weight.

All the rods to be cast under the same / similar weather conditions on a casting range ...... ie. Brakendowns

5 measured casts per rod per weight / reel and line combo, throw out the best and worst and take the average of 3.

This has the potential of going the way of the Shimano / Daiwa debate that rages on endlessly in the Saltwater section.

Invariably it gets into a full on product bashing thread followed by the consensus that each one uses the reel best suited to his/her requirement and that he likes to fish with, BTW I have 23 Shimano reels, 4 Daiwa's and 2 Banax's

There I've said my say, long winded and all. I fish with my Ovals, my son fishes his Firebursts and customised 10' Torpedos, Martin Fishes his RBII and Dave his G2 13' and we're all happy and we're all Proteas (the Seniors) and my Son has 4 x SAFBAF bank angling Caps and we're all happy.

Danie who loves his dad's standard DC's went on to win the Junior National trials and was selected to the Junior Protea side fishing his own Purglas Carp 3500 (11'6")

So where will it end?

goed gestel daar Enigma

en dan kry n mens ook mense soos ek.

net omdat ek nie geld wil spandeer nie, koop ek nie nuwe stoke nie.

horses for courses.

die daiwa/ shimano het darem n einde gekry.

Ek het dit ook gesien, wat ek opgetel het is dat die Oval DC wat hulle getoets het die kort 10ft ene was.. vat die 12/13ft ene en eks seker dis 'n ander storie!

I have both , and I prefer the Ovals , just because of the fish playing capability and the fact that it feels more accurate.
Yusuf's idea of an oval black is a little bit obscured though.

I have 2 Sensation Velocity 13 which i bought recently and they cast well etc i also have 2 purglas 13 custom built a few years ago by enver @ anglers den and i still prefer my purglass i just feel thet the purglass throws well maybe not as far but i play a fish much better because its a softer tip. but nothing wrong with the sensation rods maybe i just need to get used to them.

Enigma your posts on fishing rods tackle etc are very interesting. Thank you.

I am no Carp fundi but for the brief encounters I have had with these fish, they bring great pleasure even when comparing it to a good size Stumpnose. AS Long as its a fish I want to catch it.

But if you look closely it was done by the editor.of the Bank Angler under controlled conditions and undrt his direction using personnel of independent companies to get actual stats and figures.

I still say fish the rod you are comfortable with and that gets your bait to whete the fish are feedimg. Fir this purpose I have 8 Oval rods including.the Assassin blade, 9 Blur Marlin rods, 6 Sensations incl 4 Ovals and I'm happu because they help me to catch fish.
