Fishing Myth Mosselbay

Hi

I'm quite new to fishing in this area, but I'm starting to think that there's no fish in this area, or I'm doing everything wrong.

My story so far:

Moved here about 2 months ago, have been fishing about 2-4 times a week. I've tried at all the spots I've heard of using sardines, chokka, pilchards, red-bait, white mussel etc.

My catches so far include: 2 small sharks, a few blaasoppies, a lot of babers and 1 tiny strepie.

Every day I hear of people bragging (not on Sealine) about the big fish (edibles) they caught at the spots I frequently go to, but I'm starting to think they're all just a bunch of liars as I've never seen anyone catch a fish at these spots while I was there. 

Would anyone from this area please comment on this as I'm out of ideas.

Come to Botha strand. There is some cob coming out there and at Great brak river(suiderkruis)just stay away from the holes here and rather look for two holes connected with a  channel (parallel to the beach) connecting them and a sandbank behind the channel. get a good cast onto the bank or wade and cast. Using pink prawn you might pick up white steenbras too

most of the fish coming out here are young fish. Chokka works well now but if you can get hold of live mullet use it. Dig a hole in the sand ans put some builders gumplas in there. fill with mullet and water and 2 or 3 drops of aniseed oil. They last long that way. just check the first few minutes they tend to jump, but calms down qiuckly. at night if you use a lamp dont leave it too close to the little dam you have built.

the guys bragging about the BIG fish. check their left thumbs for little burnmarks/lines. if there is non you are being led around the bush. Down here are a lot of guys that fish with a brandy and coke and Stywe lyne in their lounges. Take everything you hear with a bag of salt. Rather believe what you see(or catch it self)

Thanks for all the advice.
I won't stop trying till I get something. Maybe live bait and prawn. Not sure where Botha strand is, but I'll find out and give it a try.

I am leaving for Hartenbos mouth at about 5 o'clock. Heard about some shad coming out there. Maybe it will be worth the visit

adri advice from another noobie, pick one beach catch there constantly, that way u do not chase the fish. when someone speaks about where to catch, they speaking about what has been caught, so goin there is moot cause the fish are already caught. i only go to one beach that i feel confident about and if catch i catch and if not there is always next week.

I just got a bunch of catsharks there on Saturday evening. Silent bob has some good advice there. Pick a spot and work it. The fish must pass there. Hours=fish

adri my bru, do not be despondent. false bay has to rate as one of the most difficult areas to fish in the country because you really have to work for your fish. reading conditions is absolutely critical. noramlly if you are getting the cat sharks it means the water was too flat and clear. one of the most difficult things to come to terms with is fishing for what is in front of you. ie you go down to target kob but it looks better for gallie etc. what i have been hearing a fair bit of lately is that they guys using lighter lines are picking up fish in between the guys that aren't. jan was smashing pan sized kob the other day and not one of the other anglers got fish. they were using the same bait etc...the only difference was he was using .40 flourocarbon hook snoods and 2'O hooks and the other guys were using .80mm and 8'O hooks. with fish so diminished you need to have every trick up your sleeve. try spend some time with guys who know an area, it will bump your learning curve in the right direction very quickly.

Yah Mantie, you're right bru.... you will probably find that most of the other guys were probably not using Fluorocarbon, just plain nylon leaders. Many guys poo-poo the Fluorocarbon "advantage", saying it's all market hype... but it's times like in your story where it really makes a difference....

Something that works for me.
See the strong south easter blowing today. Not a good time to hide away.Fish here loves this weather. They say it will blow till thursday and soft breeze friday. Keep a eye on the air pressure. It will slowly rise now. Around thursday evening it will start to drop. Its on that drop that you want your bait in the water.

A mosselbay secret revealed:
After this 3-4 days south easter you will see that there will be lots of waves at santos beach,there where it normally looks like dam. Get to danger point before sunrise with pink prawns and you are almost gaurenteed a Big Steenbra's.The sunset works also but I get most success on sunrise

The great brak river mouth also got opened at 3 today. Feeding frenzy there for next few days. Use mud prawn or live mullet. Remember, MATCH THE HATCH.
Using chokka in that dirty water will also work but it will definitely earn you a place in my fishing club

These guys know what they are talking about on the west coast u hear story after story but when u get there its too late target and master an area before changing and unless u get a call ,that the fish r on the bite at that moment in time go!

Thanks for the advice everyone, the wind's a bit strong today, but I'll definitely go out tomorrow if it calms down a bit.

Do you perhaps know where I can get hold of baby squid over here. I was in Mbay on holiday a few years ago and got some from fishersmans world in town. Caught a descent sized cob and some grunters on it while nobody else got anything. Fish seemed to love it.

I think the most important piece of advice hasn't been mentioned yet ........... JOIN AN ANGLING CLUB!!! It will go miles and miles in helping you know where, when and what's happening. It will also allow you to fish with a few guys so it will be safer too. Besides........ then you can steal with your eyes maaaaaan :spite

It always amazes me that most members of most sporting codes thrive on club life and how much their individual game improves, yet angling clubs are somehow not included.  :?
