Can anybody brief me on  fishing licence as i heard that when  fishing from a boat only the skipper needs a licence.A few guys have told me that they were stopped by the cops in the bay and everyone aboard was asked for their fishing licences. Please shed some light.

Hi Raza

The bylaw states that each individual need a licence for recreational fishing...however for commercial fishing the skipper only needs a licence.

Hiya

If you're a recreational angler, you WILL need a licence. The rule was that if you fish off a boat, ANOTHER licence was also needed. MCM has how-ever scraped that rule and replaced it with: only ONE angler on board needs to have a licence that allows him to fish from a boat. Normally, its the skipper/owner of the boat who has that licence. (you can check on your current licence, there is a block for fishing from a vessel)

Bottom line, if you're not the boat owner or skipper, you ONLY need your normal fishing licence and possibly a bait licence.

On commercial boats, nobody has a licence. The boat has a commercial licence and the owner/skipper has a licence. This is not the same licence that the recreationals have. ALL crew members on commercial vessels MUST have completed a pre-sea safety course before they're allowed onto a vessel. I think that was made law in June/July last year.

Hi Raza,

I renewed my license a while ago and bought one which covers all occupants on the boat. It is not the same as your individual permit. On top of my personal permit I had to pay an additional R70 annual fee for the "boat" permit. So now anyone can fish off my boat and doesn't need to have their own permit.

Hey Mornay

Guess what ,i just got stopped by the water cops on saturday at the Durban Bay and they checked all safety equipment on board and when they asked for fishing licence i told them that i am the skipper and i have a licence that should include all they guys that are fishing on the boat but he said that each individual MUST have their own fishinging licence.I told him that i did not know about this law so he said he will give me a break this time.

Hiya

Raza786, the cop is right. EACH angler MUST have a FISHING LINCENCE AND only ONE angler aboard needs the additional licence for fishing off a boat.

For confirmation of this, simply read number10. on your fishing permit, from the Post Office, which states:

"Additional fee per vessel for recreational fishing from such a vessel. (Only one person on such vessel requires this type of permit.) Abalone diving from any vessel is not permitted"

Hi miles,

That's exactly what I was referring to. Raza, If the cops want to give you headache again about permits, just show him your copy and your receipt proving that you have paid for the additional permit to cover everyone on the vessel.
