Fishing Injury - A "Wuss" Perspective....

OK, in June I fished at Hells Gate with Nepptune and Greg (admitably with Malaria still in the veins) and at 1 stage while on a smallish AJ.... something in my left shoulder went "Click" and hurt like Hell.... but when you're fishing - and on a fish you ignore the pain.

A few weeks later, the pain was still there. I "rested" my arm but then we had SAFTAD, followed shortly by the National Boat Show (and yes, somebody has to carry loads of stuff - yup Me - "Kieppie"). Straight from the Boat Show, it was back to Hells Gate in August..... and more fishing. This is when I realised the "pain" may be a little more serious than a simple sprain. We even had one of our guests providing me with an anti-inflamitory used for horses! Blue Stuff (applied externally, not the other blue stuff taken orally guys).

September while in Brittania Bay, pain got a lot worse.... ended up with a Doc in Vredenberg. (Very nice Doc, and correct diagnosis). He prescribed SERIOUS anti-inflamitory medication which has eased the pain somewhat, but the caveat was that they would have to correct the issue (Shoulder Tendonitus) surgically.

Now as an official WUSS, I have an aversion to Needles and Scalpels... and all that stuff......

I have an unpleasant morning tomorrow with some "quality time" together with a Sports Injuries Specialist, under "sonar" (necessary for Soft Tissue Damage localisation or whatever they call it) with Needles and Cortizone involved while I watch in real-time! Nice - I'm a WUSS - guess what the LAST thing I want to watch is? And the BEST thing is..... this is just "interim" until the surgical correction happens in a few weeks. Great - exactly what a WUSS likes?

Tell you what, it is so sore at the moment I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow morning! Even as a WUSS! Apparently, I will have relief shortly thereafter with a few weeks effectivity.

(Note: I am a WUSS, I hate Needles and scalpels...... but hate pain worse)

If you guys have an injury that persists..... good plan to have it checked out early so that (even if you are a WUSS like me, you can get it resolved quickly).

If you hear any screeching, screaming or wailing around 8:30am tomorrow..... its probably me being a WUSS!

Cheers, RB

All the best there, may it turn out good.

Roy, cortisone is a wonderfull muscle healer, I would first go that way before going the knife way.

Maybe a good thing to first try that and then the knife.

Keep me posted

thanks guys..... ahh no alwyn, please not that!!!! (I hear you Bro, I know the saying) but whew - as a wuss, I can't deal with too many aches & pains simultaneously!!!!

Yeah Simen, by all accounts the knife is necessary (a few alternatives like keyhole etc) but intervention apparently is required.

Anyway guys, I will probably look like a tantrum child but I PROMISE I won't cry/scream/howl etc.

Will take it like an adult wuss! Geeeez, will be great to not have the pain! Whew.... unpleasant to say the least.

All the best there RoyBoy, may your doctors be blessed with good judgement, and you with a speedy recovery. tight lines soon mate.

@Simien - sounds like you know about cortisone, whats your experience with it? every now and then i have to take an agressive course of cortisone (16/day deareasing by 2/day after every week thereafter) - it works but the side effects suck - before long i start to become very grumpy & moody, bloated, hungry, heartburn - is this your experience too or is it just me? i don't get very comitted feedback from the pharmacists etc

sorry for the hijac but just need to ask. - thx F

Best of luck Roy, hope it all goes well. I had a similar problem with my elbow a few years back caused by excessive fly fishing off shore with big fly rods and heavy flies and even after the op I had to go for months of phisio and was not allowed to cast a fly rod for almost a year, now it is all OK.

Good advise to check it out.

Let us know how it goes bud.

That stuff is bad for you, I had to be on it for a year and the after effects for years later are not nice.

I have had cortisone on a couple occasions, direct injection to a sore or inflamed muscle area.

Side affects are as you describe, I have not had, but to be honest also never had it as strong as you describe.

Will talk to my son, he's a md and ask him about it.

thanks Simien - i'll appreciate that, yea just to get a candid unguarded opinion. the tablets are in conjunction with cortisone injections in my eye.
