I gotta be honest, the state of our oceans is really getting to me in a big way.
We dived Van Strand on Friday afternoon for around 2 hours. The viz was excellent and the water warm but in the 2 hours, all we saw was a few galjoen (damn they were lucky that its out of season).
On Saturday, we dived at Bakoven for around 3 hours and saw and shot very little (decent sized Milkfish and 2 decent sized Hotties).
Is it just me or is this getting worse and worse....

On the bright side, there are still some good fish to be had, if you put in the time & effort.
However, this is the perfect time to point out the obvious: Guys, don't kill fish just for the sake of it and freeze them. Take what you need for tonight's dinner, and maybe one for a mate, but leave the rest. Some species seem to be coping well with pressure, for example Yellowtail in the Cape. And I don't expect people to launch and shoot only two when the tail are "dik", but there really is no need to take 10 tail (or 10 hotties) on those purple days, rather take 3 or 4 (and even fewer would be better) and enjoy the diving.
Unless, of course, you are selling your catch, which is equally uncool. And before you ask, Yes I have done these things in the past, but that is largely because no-one was pointing these things out back then, and I was not clever enough to see it at the time. We have the opportunity to change the way we use the ocean, let's use it and see if we can stop the rot of our fish stocks.

ad::I think there are still good fish to be had but it's become more technical in that you really have to know your spots and what conditions will work... and you have to work harder for your fish but that is what makes it fun... that one day that it all lines up and you find something really special... but you also learn to enjoy the simple things like the scenery and working on depth... it's not just about the shooting...
but it's fun coming out of the water with a good one!
