first timer

Hi guys,
Ive been monitoring this spearfishing forum for a while and its got me hooked (or speared)

Ive never been spearfishing, but I have been diving for crayfish (if you can call 3-4m water diving)

All thats keeping me from spearfishing is the lack of knowledge about it...

How often do you encounter sharks? and what do you do then?:ssswim:
How deep should you dive for nice fish?
Can you just go from knowing nothing (like me) to start spearfishing?


Im going on holiday to Palmiet and then later in December to Hartenbos. Are there any spots I can practice and get some result?

Any info would be appreciated. And also, what is a good gun to buy on a very low (student) budget?

Hi Aiden ,

My belief is sharks are only a problem if you let them become a problem , just remember you will be entering there relm and have respect for them , i have had a few encounters with nurse sharks , gully sharks , nothing major but the first time i almost Sh!t myself , thereafter i remained calm and keep a close eye.

They are beautiful fish to watch underwater and never a dull moment underwater.

If you are new to Spearing , i would suggest that you get in contact with a club , so you could meet people with the same interest , you can also contact Rabitech in cape town for any additional info www.rabitech.com

There are loads of guns and equipment in the market , so you first need to ask yourself what type of hunting interests you , cave , blue water , ect.

I have a few guns and would recommend the Rob allens , Rabitechs , Picasso and omer guns , with a breakaway system.

If you have dived for kreef and are comfortable then you should be alright for diving slightly deeper.

I am a useless spearfisher but I have been able to land fish within my range restriction. I seldom work deeper than about 8 to 10m.

Yellowtail for example are often found in water around 8m at Buffels on a drop off type of ledge that runs parallel to the shore.

Galjoen are often found ridiculously close to shore and I have had a couple of dives where I have swum far out and seen nothing only to see "tea tray" size gallies on my way out in about chest deep water.

As to Hartenbos. It is considered a very sharky area. I have never dived their but have heard the stories of big cracker. Breneke's Klip is famous but your chances of bumping into the man in the grey suit are supposed to be good.

As always start at Rabitech and work from there. The owner is such a wealth of info and such a good oke that he will sort you out. He is the kind of guy who will sell you what you need even at the expense of his own profit.
