Fin-Nor ofc30H

Hi guys. I'm looking for some advice on the following topic. I recently purchased a Fin-Nor ofc30H and used it for the first time this weekend. It has amazing cranking power and was able to get me out of trouble quickly as we were fishing over some serious bricks. Very happy with the reel. Only worry is that it felt incredibly tight when casting...will this loosen up with age? I'm pretty useless when it comes instruction manuals? Cheers

Hi.
Could be one of two things. The brake blocks on the spool for the centrific control is still in or the bearings are full of grease and needs to be cleaned and lubed. Also there is a felt washer on the spool side plate over the bearing. Remove that and you will be fine. Did that to mine and now its 100%

Thanks Boerseun,

I dont think its the brake blocks, they seem to be working fine. Regarding the bearings being full of grease. Can I do this myself or should I take it to someone who can service the reel? Otherwise, are you still happy with the reel and its performance?

it is one of the best reels i have ever owned. You can remove the bearings yourself. I think there is a tutorial by Alantani under the reel servicing and maintenance guide. It is for the OFC16 but will do. Take out the brake blocks i noticed that it affected my casting to much.

This is what I did to mine and it casts like a dream. I took the bearings out and oiled them with hot sauce and then removed the centrifugal brakes on the reel.I then removed the felt washer like boerseun said. The reel has some seroius cranking power, just move the handle to the outer setting. It also has great line capacity and can take 600m of 50lb HMP braid and a good 230m of 0.55mm topshot. I only use mine for sliding and throw-baits for toofies.

Thanks Dave, as replied to Boerseun.
I dont think I'm at your level or experience yet or will probably take some time to get there. I think I'll keep the blocks in for now and get use to it. But where exactly is the felt washer you guys mentioned? Is that on the inside of the spool tension cap? It was quite lekker giving it a good whip without getting massive overwind...
But agreed awesome reel, ultra smooth!!! Thanks for the tips

Leave the blocks in, I've yet to see anybody prove that taking them out increased their casting distance.

Felt washer is on the LH side plate spool bearing I think. I prefer leaving it in as it is there to keep oil on the bearing and dramatically extends the life of the bearing and once again I doubt it increases casting distance by any significant distance.

I'd say your problem is either the oil is too thick in the bearings or the spool tension cap is too tight.

I have a Finnor 20 and all I did was take the inside seal off of the spool bearings, washed out the grease/oil and put some hot sauce on them. It still has the smallest cast blocks and the felt etc and it casts an absolute mile.

yes the felt washer is on the Left Hand side and maybe Fluke is right in his observation that it pro longs the bearings life. But the bearings does need a good cleaning in benzine maybe. With regards to the brake blocks i think it is one of those discussions that can last for a long time. I removed them and control the spool with my thumb. Tried the same on my Penn Fathom and had an epic fail. Centrifugal brakes back and it casts a mile. All i can say is find the best way it works for you.

@Boerseun I always use some terps or benzine to clean out my bearings and then put hot sauce in them. It makes a huge difference to the spinning of the spool. For example I bought a Tor 50 and once I filled it with line was told that it should spin for well over a minute but It never made 30 seconds. So cleaned them out and hot sauce in the bearing and then she spins like crazy well over 60 seconds.

As for the brakes in the reel, well I cast much better with the brakes out in mine but thats just me.

I just wish that my Tor 30 had some centrifugal brakes in it as that thing needs them as it spins like crazy.

Ok guys...all good points to take into consideration.
I removed the bigger blocks and replaced them with smaller blocks that came with the reel. I had a night time casting session at a well lit park nearby and it seems to be "looser" when casting. The real test will be when I'm out on the rocks I suppose!?^^.. Next quiestion...what the hell is hot sauce?..I thought you guys were talking about tabasco? Again thanks for all the advice

@Dave, let me understand this correctly....you remove the cast control from the reel with cast control and then you wish that the reel that doesn't have cast control had cast control vvbafvvvvbafvv

Don't worry Dave you're not the only one that thinks like that LOL I often chuckle at the fact that a Torium 30 is widely regarded as the least casting friendly reel and many regard the Saltist, Finnor & Fathom as better AND that all 3 of them can outcast a Torium30. Funny thing is a Torium30 is only one without cast control......so the reel that comes without cast control is the worst casting yet those with cast control are best!!!! So why does everybody take the cast control out:fbash

Yes, before I get shot down there are assumptions, opinions and generalisations in there BUT it makes you think hey..........

@A.D 333 Hot sauce is a reel oil made by Quantum that is very thin and allows the bearings to spin very freely. It's available at most tackle shops

If you look under the salt water section, I asked the same question regarding opinions on the Fin 30, got some good answers. Might be good info for you. Do a search under that section. The only negative part for me is the handle, might send it to A33 for an upgrade later on. Otherwise a good reel.

I've just got one of these reels...took it down to the beach yesterday...tied a sinker on for a practice cast and the sinker just drops to the floor...reel is spinning backwards so obviously the anti reverse had a problem...opened it now and I see there is no spring on it...where does it go and what do I do now?
