Entry Level Fishfinder

Hi guys,

Looking for some advice here. What is a good entry level fishfinder.

I enjoy my fishing but not a serious fisherman. Have a Fletcher Cathedral Hull boat with a Yammaha 55 HP. Normally fish Langebaan and a bit @ Gansbaai.

My shortlist so far is the:

Lowrance X4

Hummingbird Piranhamax 170

Garmin Echo 100.

Any advice or recoomendation in a similar price range.

If I can just add to your list, have a look at the Condor 345CF unit - it's full colour and good power output compared to the others on your list, and is cheaper than the b&w units on your list...

You get depth finders, and then you get FISHfinders.

A FISHfinder has a minimum of 320 vertical pixels on a 4" screen, and 480 on a 5" screen and MUST have a wide cone either 50 or 83kHz as well as the 200kHz.

There is only one transducer that has a very wide 200kHz coverage, and that is the Airmar Technologies P48W with a rotating element.

50kHz is lower than 83kHz and will therefore go deeper.

You find 50kHz on true Dual Frequency transducers such as the Airmar P66 and Lowrance DFSBL.

Hi HDW,

Maybe you should ask this question in the Paddleski section as well? Looks like the units the guys use on their kayaks.
