ENTERING/EXITING DURBAN PORT

Howzit gents,

Anyone know where i could find info or has info on min boat size and/or motor limitations( single or twin) to enter and exit break water? I am aware of all the other requirements.

Last info I had was 4.8m and has to have two motors.

Thanks DB. So out of interest if i had a 28ft mono with a 315hp inboard rated Cat C with all the requirements i wouldn't be allowed to exit or enter?

What about a 43ft Riviera with a 435hp IPS inboard?

Theres gotta be some gurus out there with more info on this ((s((peed)

Well, I see you have a stingray not a Riviera. You also won't easily find a 47'er with 1 motor.

You MUST have 2 motors not smaller than 15 HP to exit/enter the harbour.

Applies to recreational vessels.

Yes, actually two methods of propulsion ie. sailboat + 5hp.............not sure what size/tonnage it apples to going up??

This is from the LTB guidelines from a few years back so it may be outdated.

Vessels proceeding to sea via harbour entrance

Vessels to legally proceed to sea via the Durban port:-

1) Minimum vessel length shall be 4,850

2) Must be minimum category "C"

3) Must have 2 motors

4) Skipper must have skippers ticket and D.O.C.

Bennie you are correct about the Rivieras. Could have sworn i checked one a single inboard tho

But what about the yachts (MV) in the links below. They all beasts with single installations that well exceed Cat C

SAMSA's Cat C requirements state:
If outboard propulsion is used, the vessel must be provided with at least two outboard engines.

That reg is for outboards, for inboards they do ask for an auxiliary to be fitted.

The query is not about my little duck as well. Wish it was possible to vy out on it tho.

I do understand that SAMSA does not make the rules about port procedures but i have been in few meetings with TNPA for a new venture I'm working on and 9 times out of 10 they come back with " Make sure SAMSA is on board" Its as if TNPA is the landlord and SAMSA are the tenants.

Anyways have asked relevant authorities for more info. Will revert back once they have responded.

SAMSA are friggen useless, looked on their website and try phoning them about placement/installation of navigation lights - no idea.....same with questions about doing a costal skippers........clowns!!
