Elgro River Lodge, The Vaal

Hi everybody,

Me and two of my buddies have decided to do a bit of a fishing trip this december and have chosen to (hopefully) hit a few good yellows at Elgro River Lodge.

Not one of us have been there before or the vaal river for that matter, and we not to sure what to expect. Good Fishing/Bad Fishing, What this section of river has to offer? what flies work well? any info would be appreciated! We want to make this fishing trip as succesful as possible.

Look it's a top venue so no worries as for the tips tactics you really need to get onto the flytalk.com forum and use the search function - there is enough infor to read until you leave in dec

Awesome spot with great runs and drifts. Was there 3 weeks ago and although there was a lot of silkweed around i managed 24 yellows over the 2 days, i believe (from kobus at Elgro)the river has flushed since then and so once it gets down to 25-30 it will be perfect. Mustard caddis, brown PTN's and green rockworms worked well. Give a hotspot a go, although i never tried them others i was with had some success. Sizes 12 and 14 are spot on. In december the Caddis hatches will be out in full force, so late evenings in the drift right below the lodge with an elk hair caddis or adams on the surface could be great fun.

Hi everybody, back from the December Elgro river lodge fishing trip I can say all the planning, packing and travelling was definatly worth it. It didn't start to smoothly tho, we were booked in at the lodge for 6 nights and arrived a day late because we ceased our bakkies engine 20km from bloem, still +-4 hours away from our destination. With quick thinking, organisation and our determination to complete the trip we got back on the road with a different bakkie the next morning. Caught plenty small mouth yellows, barbel and even managed 1 large mouth yellow, and then not to mention all the Big one's we lost:doh The fly with the most success was small ptn variations. Biggest SM yellow landed was 3.5kg, Biggest Barbel landed was 8kg. Will try get some pics up of some of the fish.
