Durban Bay

About 6 months ago I was out on a charter in Dbn bay with 5 friends.

it was one of those really slow nights with only 3 or 4 fish between the 6 of us.

It was about 00h30 that we decided to give it a few more minutes before calling it a night. I put my line out after threading about 4 crackers onto it and started packing up when I had a take, the run was slow, steady and unstopable on my equitment. I was using a 7" rod a small coffee grinder and 15lb line.

As my reel emptied the skipper upped anchor and started following the fish, this went on for about 30 minutes when the fish finally stopped and refused to budge for about 5 minutes before I was able to start bringing it in very slowly,it felt like pulling in a dead weight no fight nothing, by the time I brought the fish (or whatever it was) directly under the boat my rod was in danger of snapping and we started pulling directly on the line when it snapped.

I would have loved to know what is was, There were various theories as one would expect like Skate, Sandshark, kob etc. but I guess we will never know for sure.

Probably a BIG skate ,we get some blankets in the bay.

I caught one last year and after 2,5hrs I got it to the boat and it was sticking out about 1m on each side.

I had to part the line coz I could not put it on the boat.

Dr Goldberg(late) fought a skate for 25 hours and the record still stands for Dbn bay

the fish is on view at Fynnlands .

Fynnlands is on the silt canal.

Go past the dry dock and take the entrance to the container terminal ,first rd left follow it till it becomes dirt .Fynnlands is sign posted with a board.
