Drunk luck

A couple of years ago my dad and his friend were doing stand water fishing with bloodworms and crackers. Just before they could head off with no fish, a sinker narrowly misses them falling just over their heads and into the knee high water infront of them. So they walk back to give this guy a tongue lashing only to realise that when they reached him, he was already into a fish and worse, he was wobbling and piss drunk. My dad landed the fish for him, a grunter over 3 kilos on sardine.

To this day he cant understand how.

Ha Ha, it's amaizing, how some guys have the luck. About five years ago my brother and a friend were fishing off my boat in the mouth at Port St Johns.

His friend at the time was new to fishing and simply cut the tail off a sardine tied it to a hook with too much cotton and tossed it overboard.

Before my brother had a chance to show him how to bait up and present a bait, his mate was into a lovely Kob. If I remember correctly it weighed 40 odd KGs, I think the photo is still up at Cremone Estates.

Anyway as much as they tried to recreate that situation over the remaining days they couldn't. Infact they never caught anything for the remained of their stay.

They weren't drunk at the time but were nursing serious hangovers they had bought themselves the previous night. It was purely down to good luck that they got this fish.

Couple of years ago, My mates and I were chasing the winter garrick at greenpoint(kzn), at 5am we stop at umkomaas and get ourselves some live bait. While fishing for livebait with are light sticks, one of my mates - the lazy one decides to get his livebait trace all rigged up and ready. So reel on rod, line thru guides, trace tied on - double KR 5/0's, it's now first light and he throws out to stretch his line and set the line on the reel so when we get to greenies he's all set. While winding the line in, BAM FISH ON, we turn around and go YA,YA,YA, 3 minutes later 5kg Kingfish landed, 5/0 kendal round perfect in the mouth, I could not believe my eyes. Spoons immediately on the medium tackle but nothing. Kingie must have went for the shiny silver hook.

We were fishing at witbank for some carp, i had got stuck quite a few times and had to snap the line often, anyway i finally got a nice pull and reeled in,to my amazment, i had reeled in one of my lost rigs that had got tangled my current rig and a nice sized carp, whats even more crazy was that the fish was hooked with the lost rig and it had just got tangled in my newer one, if my mates hadnt of witnessed it, they would not have believed me.

Ever cought a fish out of the water ? I did.

In Roodeplaat dam when the canaries were so plentifull and agressive I quickly found that hanging the small loodkop about 100mm above the water had them jumping for it.

Cought a couple that way.

Oh yes. I once cought a 6kg baber in between dense grass and weeds - without a fight.

The bank made a steep dropoff of about 300mm. I was wading with 10lb line and a small loodkop for some small carp which was aplenty.

Saw this baber and realized I was never going to get it out, but hey it was a comp and one has to try. Swam the loodkop towards it, and it went GOMPPP - and lied still with the loodkop in it's mouth.

Now what... ! So it picked up my right foot and stomped next to it. It jumped out of the water onto the bank, the loodkop still in it's mouth. Had my specie there - and legally cought in the mouth too.

Hahaha, no. But a mate of mine said he was out on a ski boat fishing, and all of a sudden about 15 small bait fish jumped clear out the water and straight into the boat!

A few mates and i were fishing at Gaanzekraal...we were catching cows and there were lots of them, a fish or pick up every throw! Anyway we wernt drunk or hung over but the story go's as follows...Jacques throws a big cow bait and get an inquiry and he says this is a big cow, cow pulls him flat and as he tightens up on it his mainline parts.... a few pulls and fish later i get a "pick up" and the cow comes in with me all the way to the front rocks before pulling me down. I strike and feel its a particulary heavy fish and after about 10mins the cow is ready to be gaffed and we notice my trace is wrapped around Jacques leader which is connected to his trace which is in the cows mouth. There is a big swell that day and the cow is in the bricks the whole time and eventually just before we gaff it jacques leader is cut off. A huge wave then lifts the now "free" cow shark up over the ledges and in to a rock pool behind us!!!! Yoh if thats not luck what is!???? The cow weighed 81kgs

Interesting stories here

I once caught a fish with a thermometer and a net. I was doing a project for geography in school and had to measure the temperature of the water. Stick the thermometer in the brown water and feel this tap tap tap. Thinking what the hell is that? Take it out, nothing. Put it back in tap tap tap. Relise its fish trying to eat the red part of the thermometer. so get the net (which I needed to collect organisms like snails etc), feel that tapping, stick the net down and managed to get me some talapia haha. Unfortunately got no extra marks for that

Also has a moerse overwind once and had to cut the line. Retie everything, bait up cast and nothing for half an hour. decide to call it a day, pull in, and feel something heavy on the line. keep pulling and there is my previous bit of line that I cut off that got tangled with the grapnel complete with 10kg smooth hound shark on it
