Dropshot swimbaits in the surf...

Fishing around Pumula in December, I tried various rigs for a Gulp 5" jerk shad lure.

Jighead... - tail gets removed... EVERY TIME!

Standard (hook up/palomar, sinker on tag) - Tail gets removed, hookups on rocks, bad action.

Does anyone have an alternative method of rigging, where the hook is further back in the plastic, but with adequate weight and good swim action?

I am tired of feeding fish expensive plastic, with no return.

Maybe try trimming the front of the lure so that the when threaded, the hook sits further back

This works well with the larger McCarthy plastics - just about a cm off the nose. Maybe try adding a stinger hook to trail behind the main hook.

Good idea that Ninja. attach another hook to the gape of the jighead hook using a piece of nylon or piano wire

When your plastics are being chowed at the tail, its a sign that the shad are biting, change over to a spoon
