Personally, I would buy a drop shot rod straight off. Why,because I think I've  learnt from previous mistakes.

Once you have a fly rod you realise its not suitable, so you end up buying a drop shot rod anyway, money wasted that way.

Go for a drop shot rod

Good advice , seeing as my lotto luck is as good as my fishing luck at the moment and pennies are scarce!!!!! Saw some nice tackle at suburban spares , although fishing specialist is just up the road from me , i dont really make time to go look there , also wondered about the other fishing specialist near to the old libertas flats , any good reports on that place , they seem to be there for donkeys , but i never been in there!!!

remember that a flyrod is designed to deliver a tiny fly  using afly line - so it makes sense that the rod action is clearly not suitable for using mono or braid efficently. Also, the reel on a fly rod sits right on the end of the butt of the rod - trying to use a spinnng reel will not make the rod balanced

Hi P49,

Just came across your post now...

Certainly can do.

I use a KingFisher Malachite Fly Rod with a Shimano Ultralite grinder.
Works like a dream as a drop shot outfit and the fight on a fly rod is awesome.

There is an article in July or August RS&D about targeting Grunter using a fly rod and small grinder. Something like a Daiwa Regal 2000 or Silstar hf20 with 4 to 8lb mono would be perfect.

This sort of set-up is more Grunter specific and not really suited to a novice angler as it is very light. It would take a bit of experience to land a 4kg plus grunter successfully.

Yeah, I hear you.

But its good fun, hooking a 4kg+ fish on a fly rod.javascript:emoticon(':wfish',%20'images/emoticons/fishing.gif')
