You should be arriving at a great time to get hold of some good fish. Shad have been running thick with lots on dropshot. I have been using my dropshot outfit with a small spoon - damn that rubber stuff is expensive - which seems to attract bigger fish than bait. Guys have been getting some nice kob on dropshot too. I've heard of up to 15kg but I haven't seen them yet! Plenty up to 5kg in the river mouths.
Going down on the 4th untill about the 18th. Gonna be around Bonza Bay and Christmas Rock further south. Hoping to add at least one speciesof fish on my dropshot list(also doing rock and surf).
What type of lures should I be using to target the fish down there?
Depends what you're trying for and the surf conditions. Light jigs and minnows for the Bonza bay river. Heavier 3/4 to 2oz paddletails for the surf around Bonza's and the Nahoon mouth.
Christmas rock has some great spots for dropshot. both sides of shark bay (left) and the little bay between the rock and the point are good. the rock itself is brilliant if there is a trench on the seavale side. then there's the whole bay (right) to seavale and the point...... (need i go on?)
heavier 5" jerks and paddletails as well as the big camo-worms should work. blues and greens seem to be the best colours. don't make the mistake of not having a few spoons and rapalas. shad seem to prefer the spoons; kob love the rappies.
If you can get to Chalumna river mouth then just about anything should work. WARNING! - Be very careful if you go to any of the rivers - especially south of Chalumna. there have been some armed attacks on fisherman. my mate was shot at Kiwane - luckily he's a short-arse and only got a reverse mohawk. BE CAREFUL.
if you've spent time in that area you should know some of the locals. they're pretty dialled in so check them out at the ski-boat club. if you want i can give you contact details for one of them.
best tackle shops for up-to-date info and tackle are Target line in Vincent and Billimoria in Beacon bay.
at the moment the surf is 12ft+ so lets hope it calms down soon.
i'm pretty sure you're going to enjoy your fishing!
I know a few guys from the skiboat club at the rock. Thank you for all the knowledge youve shared with me as I would really like to get into some good fish while Im there. My grandfather is only into rock and surf fishing ,well was anyway and I would like to take him dropshot fishing too. (its new to him) He stays in Christmas Rock. As for Chalumna its sad that the crime has hit that place as that must be one of my favourite fishing places.
