Drop Shot and Spinning in Durban Harbour

I went out with a client to Durban Harbour in the late afternoon.

The weather forecast got it completely wrong and told us it would be hot, clear skies and no wind, yet we found ourselves fishing in a heavy wind, in completely overcast conditions with occasional rain and some lightning in the distance.

The trip started out with a clinic on setting up the rigs and knot tying, and when the tide started to turn we got onto some serious fishing. We managed to find some Springer just after high tide that were feeding in about water about 10m deep and we tried drop shot, but this seemed to fast for them, we then through weightless flukes at them but they were just mouthing them and playing with them, we then through jerk baits but they were biting short, a slowly retrieved deep running crank did the trick and got us 3 Springer of 2.5Kg, 3Kg and a 5.5Kg, we also managed to get a 7.7Kg Springer on a live Glassy drifted out behind the boat. The feeding activity was short lived and they went off the bite.

Later on as the tide was falling we got some good king fish chases off the banks from fast drop shot but they were mostly turning on us right at the boat, I did manage to get 1 of around 1Kg.

By then the lightning was to close and so we decided to end the outing for safety reasons. Sorry no pics due to the rain.

Hi Jomac,

There is not really any confusion.

Fishing from the side by the bay has always been illegal, just that sometimes they have turned a blind eye and then some fisherman causes problems and they step up security.

From a boat it has been legal always if your boat is properly registered, except for a small period some time bach when a boat caused problems with a tug, but that has been resolved long time ago already.

The DOC is to go in and out of the harbour mouth for recreational boats, and for commercial boats it is called a ferrymans licence. To fish in the bay you need to get a port disc (Pink) this allows you in the bay, but not in and out the mouth. For commercial you get a white card and a DNA number. You will need this together with the DOC or Ferrymans to go in and out the mouth. To get a DOC you will need to attend a course and do a verbal exam with the port captain. To get your disc, the person who does your seaworthy must give you a white sheet which you then take to the port authority. DO NOT take chances there are 800 cops posted around the bay for security with not much to do and they do a lot of random checks. I have had 9 checks this year, 2 on the slipway, 5 in the bay and 2 coming back in the mouth. FA
