Dress code for jetski fishing

Now I know that this may seem like a ridiculous question,but what does one wear when fishing offshore on a jetski?

I was thinking along the lines of a long sleeve white shirt with a pair of qd baggies and maybe something on the feet like booties.A can of SPF 50 sprayon also mandatory(to fill the gaps) + hat + shades.

Advice from old salts please!

Wear what you are comfortable with. Long sleeve shirt a must in Summertime with wide brimmed hat and nylon shorts (Adidas, Nike , etc) that dry off quickly. No underpants otherwise will the jewels rust with the dampness. Winter time can you wear a wetsuit but it is normally to hot on the North coast in summertime, except if you want to look sexy on the beach. You can wear booties if you want but Crocs or shoes that dry of quickly is fine. The main issue is you must do what you find works for you and stuff the rest and enjoy the experience!!!

It's also considered good form to wear a SAMSA approved life jacket !!

I use a thin 1.5 wetsuit in summer and a 3 mm one in winter. ''Dees ol bones don't hold the heat like they use to "

Hi TAM,

Me again, i am use to the sun on the north coast and Moz, but believe me if you like 6 to 10 hours on the water on the jetski and there is no where to hide, things can get pretty hot. I dont like sunscreen, i believe all the chemicals in there is the problem, i might be wrong , but thats just my opinion.

I wear hat, with buff, sun glasses, longsleeve shirt, and then skin tight long pants. Dont forget the gloves and water shoes. The gloves might seem like a over kill, but holding onto the handle bar expose the top of your hands, i had mine burned to blisters before. So i use gloves where i cut the finger tips off to be able to do knots etc. I dont really use shoes, but that will be your choice.

I like the sound of the 1.5mm wetsuit. What about a lycra suit, has anyone tried this? Besides the fact that you would like someone that has been condomised, it would help against the sun. also means that it is alot easier to jump in should you need to cool off.

Yes of course,a life jacket is mandatory!Main concern is protecting ones self from sun!The last thing one needs is to put sun care on the back seat in haste to get fishing and then end up with sun stroke etc and ruin the rest of the trip!

Gloves and footwear also a good idea as can also act as a first line of defence against thrashing hooks!Spray on sun screen works well,just not in the eyes!Will have to use my discretion,just dont like the idea of looking like a psychedelic marine cyclist!

Hi, just a suggestion, check out the stuff the fishing ski guys wear...paddling/technical wicking type top L/s such as Excel, which doesn't have to fit as tightly as a rash vest, which is another option. (rash vests on anyone bar the young and the buff is usually not a cool look though...) You also get a thermal rash vest, alternatively a nylon windbreaker top can be put on over the paddle top when its cooler or breezy. A wide brim hat is cool but remember you still get glare bouncing up off the water.

Well i have to say, seems like the guys like to look good on the water or cool......::jdski::jdski.....but once you gone past certain age, looking cool/good on the water is right at the bottom of the list...... :::slbcake:....

Anyway, i havent tried the 1.5 mm wetsuite yet, but has anyone tried it in december to feb in kwazulu natal or moz? I know the rash vest is nice and cool(as in cold cool) and protects very well.

Well TAM, you have quite a lot of options, its just to see what you like.

you still going to jangamo? and till when you gona be there if so?

Agreed 100%!I am also way beyond caring about image!I focus more on being practical these days!Trip to Moz has been cancelled.We have decided to go to Cape Vidal instead!republic as opposed to coconut republic!I believe that at this time of the year the fishing is good there at this time of the year,and the wind should have died down(hopefully)!

Yes i am deff going. Big comp at Guinjata and i think its going to be good. Vidal should be getting good now. Nice place to be, the animals and the beach makes it a all in one holiday for the fisherman and his wife and kidz.

In summer on the jetski i wear a thin full wetsuit (1.5mm), gloves and a floppy hat.
If i start feeling a bit hot, a quick dip in the water takes care of that.
In winter the thicker suit (3mm)

I have bits and pieces from long sleeve rash, short sleeve rash, 1.5 wetsuit top, 3mm wetsuit top and bottom seperate which works well in winter on the South coast. The 3mm top is very uncomfortable though. I use a yellow rain coat top over the rash vest in winter, looks daft but works like a dream. This is quite nice as it covers the life jacket as well. I have gloves and booties in rash vest material with rubber soles.

 

I will bring it with to Vidal..
