Yep it does, but they are not easy to catch - I'm still trying. Gonna start trolling for Leeries as soon as crayfish season changes to every weekend. Will let you know.

I am going down today and will be trying everything: live bait, dead bait and lures. I use tilapia as live bait as I find them tougher than mullet and the leeries like them, if not more than mullet. I will put a line out with a sardine on for Elf/Shad if there are any around. Good luck all. Will post if anything happens.

I heard from one of my ultra good sources that 'Watchers' on Boyes Drive, equipped with sophisticated surveillance cameras, are setting traps for anglers fishing for Leeries at Sandvlei to protect the dwindling species.

These cameras are apparently so jacked up,they can even capture your baiting up via pics as evidence to check the legalities thereof.

Results have apparently been Heavy Fines, fishing gear confiscations, etc!!

Die wet se 'n man mag twee bo 70cm hou...

Ek sou verkies geen maar nou ja. Die vis in daai sesteem word uitgepit en was al deur tragedie. So asb sit hulle terug!!!

Agree with you. Leerie is a great fish to catch but please release them, they are NOT good eating.

Nope,I would never share my stuff IF I smoked!

If you lived on the Vlei like I do you would know all the POOFY that's to be heard.

The Zandvlei Trust, and other organizations are trying to preserve and conserve Leeries as not only have undersized been taken out and kept, but the Leeries are being SOLD.Yes,Sold!

But then again, you're so busy catching fish you can't see the POOFY that's happening right next to you!

If you want to understand what's not POOFY,go through all the topics on Sandvlei threads, and catch up.

Hi,Stapies!Huge thumbs up for your referral to 'Catch and Release' wrt
Sandvlei

No,it's not illegal to fish there. But it may be one day if illegalities pursue, and that would be a sad day for many anglers.

What the Zandvlei Trust, and similar organisations, are trying to stamp out,is the undersized fish being landed and not returned to the Vlei.

There have been stories of anglers catching double figures of undersized Leeries and selling them.

So,you get the wino's or unemployed fishing crews catching Leeries day after day there crippling the Leerie resources.

I drive past Sandvlei as much as 6 times a day as this is where the sun comes up for me in the mornings.

I have seen some shady crews there, fishing on other Side of Vlei so they can get away quicker on foot if approached as there's no access by road on that side. And there's the usual papsak or bottles to pass the day away.

So,next step would be to tighten up on fishing there.

Cheers

Agree 100% with the conservation side, release every Lerrie I catch. If there is anything I can do to help the Zandvlei Trust please let me know, it is very important that we try preserve what is left.

Thanks

So are we allowed to fish Zandvlei or not? And has anyone had any luck recently? I will of course release any fish caught so I can't see the harm.
Yes,no problems fishing Zandvlei.Should you need further info, google Zandvlei Trust thread.

I need to drive past angling sites when going towards Muizies way,and there are quite a few anglers fishing there regularly, but can't tell you if catches are made or not.

But you're welcome to fish Zandvlei, there's no talk about stopping the fishing, and main issue has been about conservation above all else.

Cheers

Yes you are allowed to fish Zandvlei.
Please just release what you catch so we can all have fun.
Let me know how it goes.

Thanks guys. Out of curiosity, whereabouts in the vlei do you find normally produces the best from the side? I fished there about 3 times before the die off and never had any luck.

Hi Guys

There are some very small leeries around in the vlei, since the die-off last year the biggest one I have personally seen is around 1kg. I have heard rumours of the odd better one but have not seen any.

Most of them are really tiny, hardly worth the effort and they should really be left alone as much as possible to grow, but if you do go down please note new by-laws in force:
  • NO LIVEBAITING ALLOWED[/*]
  • No treble hooks on lures[/*]
  • Catch and release only for all indigenous fish[/*]
  • Fishing permit required[/*]
Of course, it would be nice if these new laws were adequately enforced all the time, but as has always been the case at Sandvlei it is up to us anglers to 'educate' the less informed and those guys who take out whatever they catch there, including some really tiny steenbras.
The sad reality is that the Vlei is a shadow of what it was. It should be allowed to recover through a total ban on fishing for 2 years. This would hurt me more than anyone as I live across the road, but I would happily accept this to see it become alive again.
