DIY Fishing Rig

Hi Guys,

Being new to the sport, and considering the startup costs, and the distances I need to travel to get to the ocean, I designed and started building a rig to accommodate two safety bottles, a 45L cooler box, 4 rod holders and and holders for the gaff and the lipgrip tool.

The idea was based on what Kiwi's and the Ozzies do, by only using a cooler box, and attaching rod holders to that, but I still wanted the flexibility of a frame, to attach stuff to.

After getting quotes to build a stainless steel frame to my size and specs, I decided that the costs aren't justified if I only get to go fishing on the big blue 4 to 5 times a year.

After roughly 4 hours, and having spent R 750.00 this is what I ended up with.

50mm PVC pipe connected with 90deg bends, three and four way connectors. Hilti Pipe clamps used to connect to ski with s/s turn-buckles, and also to attach rod holders.

More once completed

How we are going to mount the rod-holders. Once all parts were glued together, and the frame filled with foam, it was more sturdy than we expected.

Total weight is probably 2-2.5kg empty. My main reason for building this was because the stainless steel frames are costly, and no one in my area seems to be willing to build one for me. So if I have one made elsewhere, the courier costs will be astronomical.

Another added advantage of this is that if something does break, I just need to pop into my nearest plumbing supplies store, buy another length of drainpipe, cut it to size and stick it in place. The only tools required to build this is a hacksaw, screwdriver, a pen, and a tape-measure.
