Diving for crayfish at kalk bay harbour

I looked at the map of restricted zones before going out to dive for crayfish at kalk bay harbour.  According to the map, the restricted area ends at the end of the tidal pool in front of the brass bell.  When I was about to go in, a boat full of anglers were screaming at me: "Moenie hier kom kreef steel nie!!".  I thought, whatever and proceeded anyway, because according to the map, it was legal?

Can anyone clear up whether or not you may dive from a harbour wall, and more specifically in this case kalk bay harbour wall...

The "locals" do not seem to have a problem taking them out amongst the dollosse at the end of the short jetty leading from the Brass Bell!

Diving in the harbour or from the wall is not allowed.

Speak to the harbour master and chief inspector, Mr.Pat Stacy at Kalk Bay. He will tell you EXACTLY where you may or may not dive.

I've speared PLENTY of fish in the kelp beds to the right of the harbour wall. Worth diving that area for crays, but be warned, Great Whites DO frequent the area!!

Looking at it purely from a safety point of view, its a COMMERCIAL FISHING harbour, which means high volumes of boat traffic. VERY easy for a boat to run a diver over!!

Miles is this the same harbour master that lets the half of cape town park on the harbour wall at night when chokka season is up and running??

Seems safety is the last thing on his mind.

The southern boundary of that part of the Marine Reserve ends at the pool in front of the Brass Bell and the harbour is not part of the reserve.

BUT the Regulations to the Marine Livning Resources Act give incredibly wide powers to the harbour master to regulate avtivities in and around a harbour and also prohibit diving in a harbour (Without written permission.).

Sorry to disappoint you guys, all I have caught is a cockle and a crab, while using a net. There do not seem to be any crayfish. At Kalk Bay, they may be feeding on fish offal, but we are not allowed to take them out.
