disgusting forefathers

We always hear stories of our grandfathers and their grandfathers catching 30 salmon and 200 shad in one day is this one of the reasons we have massive shortage of fish in our waters???

I beleive they did contribute to the decline in fish populations but not as much as the then Commerical anglers

but I beleive this was a lack of information and ignorance (maybe the wrong word)more than a disrespect for future generations - I am sure if they knew how often Sharks had pups and how long it took to reach maturity then we would have a different picture today.

if they had access to scientific information and scientific bodies like ORI back then I am sure we would have had healthier populations

I mean catching 200 shad a day means that there was over population as such of these fish

by not returning large trophy fish I am sure they did not know they were destroying the breeding stock .... thats my thoughts as I think they where uneducated in biology of fish in general

I support Raggieman's views. There is no way that sport anglers can do the damage that commercials do. We from the side practice catch and release. Yes we do keep the odd one for the fire. I have never heard of a commercial practice c.a.r. What about the floating factories? Once the fich has been gutted and cut to fillets how does one determine what size it actualy was. No Head, no tail, no skeleton------ NO EVIDENCE.

Im afraid guys... pictures like that are not a thing of the past, there are a few guys who call themselves fisherman and still create scenarios like the one above in this "sophisticated" age of ours, whilst some try to conserve, preserve and educate others just exploit, destroy and raid so can you see the balance now!!!

Guys
Let keep it with the times.....guys in KZN during the last two months are catching up to 200 shad per day...I have reported some incidents to the authorities with numberplates of cars yet you see the same guys next day. I have waited for the Parks Board on one occassion for over 1.5 hours. I heard of an incident today at Toti of one individual taking two gunny sacks of shad.
SO dont only blame our forefathers...we have some real MORONS at the moment...Personally I cannot wait for the Shad season to close to give these fish a break.

I hear you and yes there are elements among us that exploit the ocean today in its fragile state and that is a topic on its own and parks board should do something about it, unfortunately we will never be rid of the those elements as long as greed is around.

However this topic deals with the question of whether our forefathers are to blame for our current predicament and 20 30 or 50 years from now the same question could be asked about our actions or inactions. Maybe they well say that we were stupid and barbaric even to practice the sport of fishing....

I feel alot has changed as result of the information we have available to us today over the last twenty years with in the fisheries management. And if that information was available in 1920 onwards I think we would have a different picture today.

I mean it must of been amazing to catch 50 - 60kg Cob without an effort or 200 shad a day in a mornings session and none of them under 40cm or catching a 900 plus kilo shark and claim a world record, but it is also saddening to see those fish lying dead on the cement. I enjoy my fresh fish every now and then but what does one do with 200 shad. therefore use our resources wisely and dont exploit them.

But peoples mind sets dont change over night and thus it will take time for people to use our fisheries as sustainable fisheries rather than exploitation thereof .

The big problem is of course to pinpoint exactly what is leading to a decline in the fish numbers. I believe there is still not enough information available.

In the August issue of Absolute Angling I found the following stats. The author admits it is a few years old, but it still makes for some interesting reading

Catches in Natal between Kosi bay and Durban (per annum).

64 tons spearfishing
500 tons skiboats
900 tons Rock and Surf
1100 tons Commercial

I cannot comment on the accuracy of these figures, how it was arrived at or on how many fish were released, but I was surprised that R&S catches came so close to the commercial catches.

Anybody with more updated figures or similar stats for other parts of our coastline?

my question is how do they get these stats especially from Rock and Surf Angelers

and 1100 tons from Commerical that seems a little ??

I think those figures are not accurate , there is no way anybody will convince me that R&S anglers take out that amount of fish.Commercials yes , maybe even double that.

In Natal I recon 90% of fish caught from shore is Shad , maybe more.Shad has shown itself to come back quickly , just look at the current season.

These figures are made up to make the r&s look responsible for the decline in fish.

I feel for commercials fisherman , but their industry is slowly dying ( not for all ) which in turn will help fish stocks grow.

Hi guys,

Our forefathers are much to blame for raping the ocean as some of our fisherman today. Infact, calling them anglers or fisherman is an insult to the sport we so passionately try to protect. Jace is right. Some of these guys today pretent that the law does not exist. I too cannot wait for the shad season to be over. We will go back to our clean fishing spots again, parking will be a breeze and idiots will be gone untill they get their badges again next year.

I think that we at sealine should plan an "assault" on these guys. Pick a hot spot, pretend to fish, mark the culprits and make a lesson of these guys. This way they will not know who is out to get them and who's not. If they cannot abide by the law willingly, we will force them to. Peacefully of course.

Yes it is a shame and it happens everywhere even here in Aus where the government has attempted to police it. Unfortunatelly over this way its predominantly immigrants or descendants of immigrants that are the greatest abusers of fish stocks.

My relatives and friends raped the crap out of the sea and often filled there boat with fish, god only knows what the pro's got up to at the time as well in the past. Other factors also effect fishing for example here, were the pro's used to dredge our waters for scallops depleting an important food source. After 10 years the fish have returned due to dredging seasing. But now the new pros net everything and often discard thousands of undersized snapper in the evenings.

One of the worst things i read about recently was of pros netting tonnes and tonnes of sea mullet every year and disgarding them! what for you might ask? The answer is for there eggs to be exported to Italy!!! They have over fished all there waters and now are paying great $$$ for our pro's to do the same to our waters.

You'll probably find the same thing happening with your chokka "calamari" industry a great majority goes over to europe because they have destroyed there own industry.

I'm not sure what the answer is because at the end of the day money talks. And its very difficult to change people's mind sets.

Milt,
