Guys anybody had luck in the gullies infront of the carpark thats by the vlei?there just seems to be loads of nice gullies , surely something would be in there if there is nothing else going on.we have got some nice fat gallies in that pool infront of the carpark some years back , also had something grabbing and snapping 10kg kingfisher line there last outing around this time last year.from reading the threads it appears that there are some big cows in the weeds , so it could have been that or the elusive grandaddy kob , will find out oneday hopefully.

Just looking at getting some fresh air this weekend , dont want to travel too far , any advice would be great

nice pic camo , only checked the post now , the good old klippie , there are thousands in there , but there are also some lekker galjoen in the far right corner when the tide pushes .Also some other unknowns that bite and run , feels like kob , but breaks 13kg kingfisher like it was cotton.Last year around this time had that happen twice in one day on the pushing tide when its lekker foamy on the edge there.Went out as far as i could on sunday when it was dead low to check and there is a nice deep gully there , couldnt really see the bottom , but it washes under the kelp and that in the corner.I guess on high tide its where they come in and feed , but there are big things in there, still to this day dont know what it was , lots of shaking , decent bite , then it turned and ran , pop , like a bus.Any ideas?Must make a plan soon to go with dshot and heavy stuff!!!!!!

Hi p49

The area called 'die Vlei' is situated some way to the left of Melkbos below the Culture Centre. Nearest access is through the fisherman's gate at Bontekoppies right next the far left gate to the Centre, before you actually reach melkbos from Blaauberg Strand. The idiot Centre Manager has apparently tried to block the gate with dried branches but one can still get through with some effort. He has been intimidating anglers fishing from the beach at Bontekoppies but he actually has no say. The area up to the high water mark is what you call Admirality Reserve and open to public access. So if he confronts you or asks for your fishing lisence, ask him for his id as Fishing Inspector.

Anyway, die Vlei normally produces Hottentot and some Galjoen, while the guys with their little 'bakkies' lying off shore at the mouth of the Vlei (just out of casting reach from the beach) caught a lot of Geelbek and Cob this Summer. Mostly undersize, however.

The area at the Melkbos slipway produced several smallish Cob this Summer. I can believe that something could have broken you up there. I've seen a number of fairly large Cows taking fish bait meant for Cob from the beach.

Hope this helps.

I am not residing in Cape Town anymore, but grew up in Melkbosstrand. Those days fish were still abundant. The Vlei has ALWAYS been one of my Favourite spots. I have caught some nice galjoen, kolstert and hottentot there over the years with the Rod. I have also caught plenty of fish from my canoe, galjoen, kolstert, cob, white stumpnose, hottentot.

The water must be a bit strong and from the side red bait & wonder worm is king.
