Deep hook ups...

hi

went fishing for barbel today with my 2 kid cousins. between us we got 10 fish in 2 hours. all between 1.5 and 2.5, except one. my cousin hooked a monster fish that was over a meter long but it bust him up...

I was having a problem where i hooked 2 of my 5 fish very deep in their throats and could not get the hook out.

whats the best thing to do in this situation? i cut the line as close as i could to the hook and released them. i felt quiet bad for the fish but i thought it was better than killing it. not sure if i did the right thing...

any ideas on how to prevent this...? I was striking as soon as i felt the bite and was using braid with a proud hook.

try circles.

Also there is a specific tool to get out hooks quite deep. but you did the right thing in the circumstances. Barble are very hardy fish. If you can prevent it try, but a released fish with 10% survival chance still has a 10% more chance than the fish you killed.

i actually switched to a circle hook and the fish still managed to swollow it... i was surprised as i thought that it was not possible...

i've thought about it and decided i'm going to flatten the barbs on the hooks. might lose a fish or two, but at least i won't feel so bad about sending back a fish with a hook in its throat.

oh, and I had a pair of long nose pliers... still couldnt get the hook out.

thanks for the tips though. i'll look into those hook removal tools.

I.ve been fishing again and this time smashed the barbs down on the hooks. lost 1 fish, but landed 4 under 2.5kgs... Was much better...

also not sure if it was alone as last time i took my 2 kid cousins and was helping them most of the time so mised the initial pick up.... this time i was ready.

I agree with Ryan on hand down the throat and unhook.

Wierdest thing I found in a Catfishes stomach was a live crab that scurried away when I took it out and once found a skull of a Catfish of about 5kg in a Catfish of about 15kg

I've unhooked gut hooked cats like this and kept them in a pool to see if they recovered and they lasted a full 24 hours and escaped by walking back to the river overnight

Better to remove the hook if you can but please get someone to hold the lower jaw of the catfish or it will writhe and scrape your arm and hand to pieces.

100% African, think bending the barbs down will cost you a couple of fish but if it is social then it sould out weigh feeling bad about killing a fish.

They don't have Pharengeal Molars like a carp but their mouths and the roof of the mouth has boney plates with millions of small rasp like teeth on them that they use to grip prey

If a Catfish clamps down on your hand and does a spirals around it will take skin (not flesh) off

yip if it clamps down and you hold still it's not bad, just a few tiny puntures that will burn a tad...

Problem is even after a 100 barbel you are likely to jerk ur hand away, thats when it leaves those lines everywhere.
