I had a great camping session at Buffels.
In the 7 days next to the water we didnt have a beep.
We did have Jet ski's constantly doing these 180deg spin turns over our swims in the margins (looked like dogs chasing their tails).
We had alot of rather inebriated people with fishing rods all over the banks casting and dropping lines where they felt like it (at one point I had 5 different people with lines over all 3 of my lines).
So the fishing was k@k but the time spent with the family next to the water was good. I will never visit another public dam during this period for fishing purposes ever again.

J, i agree with you. I told my fishing buddy that from now on I'm staying away from public venues over holidays.

Oh and I've heard all about those idiots with their jetski's, them and sometimes the bass boats that selfishly ruins other ppl's fishing by riding over their lines and spots on purpose. lol... yes I was silently wishing I had brought a heavy surf stick and a couple of 8oz grapples. In the end I cant get too upset though, the dam is for everyone and all the boats and noise were actually good for the fish, even if very bad for my fishing. With all the noise going and not a single fish biting you can be assured that no big carp ended up in steel keep nets or with second hooks in the eyes which makes me happy.
One thing that did really upset me was how easily everyone broke lines off in the water, the dentist and me pulled hundreds of meters of nylon out the water, all attached to the worst looking "strops" I have ever seen. I sat and watched in dismay as people who got knotted up or crossed lines just broke off without trying to get their lines out, like a competition to see who could bait up the fastest to get the "good spot" where they were just broken off by another person with a fishing rod a minute ago.... I dont care what your set up or back ground is, that is not angling.

Hey J...ha ha ha! shall I sound like a broken record and say ditto to everything you said lol!
Flip, we got to DD and it was jammed packed full.. we squeezed 2 pods in between a load of conventional anglers and then all hell broke loose, gp,s over our lines, pouching out feeding spots and agh!!!
We had a few beeps and caught a few amall cats, 3,5 - 5kg, few small 6-8kg carp but not what we were expecting.
Johann, lol was there too, left of us and he said the first three days they caught 14k and bigger, but then it stormed and no fish bit after that, they got so fed up, they went home early.
We arrived just after that storm, we had to move camp after the first night, although we didnt see rain there, the dam water edge moved 30m up the bank. seems the catchment area was slowly releasing water into the dam.
Flip, we really didnt catch much, but we had some nice enquiries. I lost a bfc 10m in front of us after playing him for 45mins from 250m out, just too many lines in the way, couldnt even get the dinghie out, the prop would have fowled...lol!
Yeah, so our 4day DD session was also a total disaster. But we'll live, we also wont do a dam in fact over the festive season again...
Having said that we sitting at Harties lol! "Dumb Asses"! same Sh@@@.
4th night now, last three , we had mother storms... and scorching days. my f/f shows 27-29 degree water surface temp.
With all the rain the banks also overflowing.
No Carp, except a 8kg common, lots of cats... my cat pb spec style lol 6,8kg wha ha ha ha. hey I hate those things! nice kurper in margins though.
By the way its our last night here so lets hope its the breaker.
My theory, its mid summer, full dams, natural foods washing in from catchments and mega angling pressure.
So this afternoon we relocated on the opp side where its dead quiet... activity amazing 10m in.
Will let you know how it goes, tonight looks good, no rain expected.

Well we left at 7am and had a load of enquiries, think small fish just picking up bait and not hooks... anyway was great to be away from the rat race...lol
My partner forgot to set the drag on one rod and he had a violent bite which pulled the rod off the pod into the water and snapped the 11kg braid. fortunately at the leader.... just cant help wondering if that was the one....hehehe!

Hey Guys....
Sorry for sounding so uninformed about specimen carp, but how do you do it, what do you use, how far in do you take the lines, size of the bait, how long it lies...
If you do not mind, I would like to know everything...
The fish a see on your avatars are amazing, I have been fishing for around 25 years and the biggest carp I've seen is a 11kg.
I would love to get into specimen fishing, just don't know ANYTHING about it...Is there someone that can help?

All I can say is put on your patience hat, and take it 1 step at a time... alot to learn but once you're into it the rewards are sweet! And please put the big carp back, not in a keepnet!
