Sunday 21/08/2011 I organised a trip to vd riet with a few fishing buddies. We were 7 anglers ranging from novice to club member.
We arrived at about 6 and as it was still dark we got everything sorted out so that we could cast at first light. A while later I was the first one in and had a nice pick-up within minutes! Landed a duckbill of about 3-4kg on pilchard and released it again. I have to say that very rough seas earlier this year have removed all the surf areas close to the parking area. You now have to walk 2-3km towards sundays to find sand to fish on. All the other areas you cast on rocks and reefs, resulting in huge tackle loss.
Back to the fishing, i moved north about 700m and found a spot that had some great potential. I put in with a cleaned octopuss leg and started preparing my 2nd rod. Next moment stywe lyne again within minutes after casting. Out came a beautiful cob of around 3kg. After repositioning the seekat leg, casted in the same area as i know those size cob normaly school together and i was looking for the teacher! In the meantime i kept the cob alive in a pool hoping to replace it with something bigger. Unfortunately this was the time the sharks started feeding and i caught the first leopard or maybe pyjama shark (see photo). We caught about 20 of the buggers by the end of the day.
After moving again to join the others who were catching huge blacktails, I managed to land 1 myself of close to 2kg. Caught on bloodworm.
At the end of the day everyone caught something (even if it was a shark). It was a great day at a great place with great company.
