Dawia BG 5000

Hi Guys.
Currently fishing multipliers, thinking of getting a Grinder, the Daiwa BG 5000.
Will mostly target Eds (small, medium, large :)).
Currently have a Technium Medium. For the interim, will this rod be ok?
Also, thinking of putting 40lb Braid on the BG.
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Hi MrFisha,

They are great reels for sure!
I have my 5000 paired with the horizon zero 2-4ounce, a perfect combination for eds and small non eds. 250m 40lb Grinder backing and 300m 35lb HMP topshot
Your outfit would definitely work, you can add a bionic finger for easier casting.
The BG’s don’t come lubed to much from the factory but if you grease it properly before using, it will laat you years to come.
Greased mine with Corrosion block as they are not sealed reels and even if it gets a spray or splash now and then the reels are all good.
There’s a 50min vid on YouTube to service the reels yourself, very easy to do!

MrFisha, rod is a great combination, I have the 4000, 5000 and a 6500. Terrific reels, had no hang ups with anything so far.

Thanks for the reply thus far.

On the topic of braid, what tried and tested braid would you recommend? (Daiwa, Boss, Berkley, etc.)

Will mostly be in the bricks, surf now and again.

Hi

You don't have to look further than Boss Slick or Grinder. I would say around 40-50lb. They cost about R300 for 300m

I pimped my reel with the more fancy coloured Grinder Depth Charge @ R450 per 300m

You wont fill the reel with 300m, so I would suggest you use either some older braid, or mono as backing.

...

Cheaper than most brands, but excellent. We the proletariat can't afford the big brands.

Thanks Blikkies and Poenskop on braid question.

On leaderline, should one also go with braid leader?

I don't use braid as a leader I use mono or fluorocarbon, Fluro definitely on my hook snoot. Some guys use a thicker mono, especially in the bricks, as it not as abrasive as braid.

You can definitely use a braid leader and having fluoro on your hook snoot
I personally use JDB 80lb camo, full rod length + 3 turns on my reel.
The JDB is great leader braid and ultra abrasive
Ty your top shot and leader using a fg knot

Not sure about Pta, but have seen at Mias in Woodmead.
I order all my gear from Billimoria in EC, much cheaper than Joburg shops

I own a 3000, 4000 and 5000.  They are very lekker reels and I would advise you to physically hold one before you purchase as they are much bigger than you might expect.  The 5000 BG is about a 8000 shimano size. Just be aware of this.  The difference between the 4000 and 5000 is actually quite big and you could end up with a size problem.

Great to see all the feedback guys, much appreciated.
Thinking of getting this Initial Setup:
  • Daiwa BG 5000[/*]
  • Braid: Grinder Braid 8x 30lb or 40lb[/*]
  • Leader: Mono leader? diameter?[/*]
On the BG5000, have seen some posts it's not adequately greased / oil out-of-the box. Should the BG be oiled / greased before 1st use (if indeed, which grease / oils)?
Thanks

FWIW, when Alan Hawk and Alan Tani did their reviews in both cases they were well greased, but it might be a good idea to check your reel just in case

Thanks PearlJam, noted.

Question: With the technium being a multiplier rod, will the BG5000 fit on the reel seat?

Hi MrFisha,
The reel will definitely fit on the reel seat of your technium rod but The guides might be a problem as they are small O’concept fuji guides if I am not mistaken. This will cause you not to reach the far banks or so, or so to say limit your casting distance.
Ideally the correct guides would be oversized tangle free guides as in Fuji Kway guides, but you should still be able to use your Shimano rod

Thanks MvW37, noted.

Had a look at the 13ft Adrenalin Triple X rod today at tackle shop... Wow.

Rated 5-7oz.

Thinking getting one for grinder.
