Dassen Island tail

Couple of fish we got on Saturday. Was pretty hard work, there were big shoals around but the visibility on the surface was not great,we found the fish below 18m where the water cleared up to crystal clear 20m vis.

The snoek was lost on rod right next to the boat as the hooks pulled, but didn't manage to get past the diver who was still in the water. ;)

Nice one Dean, we ended up with 7 tail on the boat, only 1 shot, though :(  And two Kalk Bay sailfish as bycatch.

Thanks Tony,we had 9 yt with 2 snoek.Hopefully they stick around for a while and if the water clears up it'll be easier going next time.

We didn't get a single take on the snakes for the yt even when we had fish all around the boat at times, also tried a jig, what did you get your fish on ?

Hi Dean,

We got the tail on snakes, the first one or two were on a jig type spinner with a red stripe down the middle.  I threw a keel spinner which normally cooks, but only had two knocks.  The snake was the answer, pulled very fast.

Cheers,

Tony

Nice fish men - did you spear the snoek? Always wanted to know what a shoal of snoek looks like under water.

Generally snoek are in very deep and dirty water,so they are not commonly speared. This one got speared after being pulled up by a chap on the boat with a rod and just as the hooks pulled at the surface,he was unfortunate that a diver was right near him and ended his chance at freedom :fbash
