So.....It is about time we have a new discussion regarding the 2 rivals.
Since the BiG fights, back in the ice age a lot has changed

Honestly I do not think that there is much difference between the 2 reels.

They are really very close to each other.
So what will you choose, the shimano or the daiwa?

And, lets keep it Civil!!!

personally.... i think both are very good.
real good value for money on both reels.
after sales service is good on both.

honestly i think the Daiwa Saltist BG range is ahead in the market sales wise.
feedback on the reels are good and no common known problems.
the high gear ratio 6.4:1 and drag system might just be the deciding factor here.
the Black gold has a nice look to it, and also a tank like gearbox. "it just stands so proud" and the frame is a bit bulkier compared to the Torium.
the only down side/ possible is the free spool pin, which is quite big and could possible get stuck on clothing.

on the other hand

The Shimano Torium HG is a real compact reel.
when it is compared with the old Torium one would agrue that the reel is smaller.
it does look nice too.
the one aspect which also stood out was how lekka you could adjust the star drag, it just sat better in ones finger.
also known problems are not common...or are there any?
if i was to stand with rod in hand all day, i might just choose the torium over the Saltist.
the free spool lever is smaller.

So lets get your views on the 2 rivals!!

Not sure if its a common problem but a friend I fish often with had his Torium 30 HG frame start corroding terribly and actually spread after about 6 months of normal use. He assured me that the reel was washed after use.

I on the other hand own a Daiwa Saltist BG 40 and since 2011 or so and had nothing but awesome performance from it. I service it maybe once in 2 years and wash thoroughly after every use. After installing an adjustable mono mag and it casts extremely smoothly even for someone new at multipliers.

leave your wife alone for two weeks and see if she also did not start to corrode.
salt water is a bastard!!!

back to teh point:

I think Daiwa, in sales is past shimano, in this range, nearly teh distance between the moon and earth.

Daiwa had some good marketing done, and sales went well.

i did contact Kingfisher last month, just to enquire the sales. they did not want to tell.....

but i will get some more information on teh sales...word of mouth is always better.

How can you draw any conclusion about sales whatsoever, considering also the massive difference in price between the two reels and the reduction in interest in multiplier reels sales in both must be low.

Skuus pylstert!!!

is n bietjie besig met werk en hengel trips.
kom ons stel dit so, inside info.

die Daiwa BG multipliers is los hande voor!!!
hulle bemarking is ook baie meer agressief teenoor Shimano

I think rather ….the hg then the bg.

depends on where you are situated.
up in gangsters...shimano os close by so servicing and parts "not that they break" is easier

down in durbs….maybe the daiwa

daiwa reels for me has always had the edge on casting.
that is how I found it.

the newer models things might be different.

on my saltiest 40h casting is further with more overwinds if not checked, so spool is spinning more freely.

the 2toriums I have cast both the same, not as lively as the daiwa.

Enigma might comment here on the daiwa drag washers, the stainless steel ones.
seems like rust was found, on the discs.
was it due to non maintenance? I do not know.
was it a isolated incident? I do not know.

it could have been a impurity in the drag system which caused the rust.... but lets see.

I love my daiwa multipliers.. Saltist that grootvis gave me when he got a BG..Slosh and my favourite GW40..But never had a shimano so haha no balanced opinion there..Even my hand me down baitcaster is an exceller that has caught a ton of bass, cob and grunter..But my experience with daiwa grinders ended with an exceller..LOL. All my favourite grinders are shimano..so funny. I love to fish with my xmaster which is a speedmaster knockoff, but when I cast my equivalent SL50 (without speedshaft) the SL outcasts it easily. The GW with the speedshaft needed a bit of taming for me with a magnet on light position, but oh my that reel can cast like nothing else..When I let off a cast it makes my soul sing everytime, the way it purrs and the way that sinker or plug just flies..I have never cast a reel like that thing does for me before it in 30 years of fishing (admittedly not using a multiplier for most of that). When ous say send a bait to the horizon now I know what they mean..I just gooi with a 10 ft rod or 12ft rod..I don't know if I could even load a 14 or 15 ft rod, but if I could with that reel that sinker would end up in the shipping lanes! So can't answer your question but here is a new one..which new daiwa multipliers have a speedshaft and which shimanos? By that I mean the spool disconnects entirely from the shaft for casting and so less inertia to overcome, friction and mass to spin etc..I don't know the specifics but it makes quite a difference to the cast..Makes it wild but when you get it under control the way that thing flys is unbelievable.

For me it’s the Torium HG as it casts a bomb and as was said before is less bulkier than the Saltist..
The saltist is a great reel and also casts beautifully but the weight and bulkiness is a detractor for me..
We fish every year for 12 days straight in Nam, I think I had 2 overwinds my oldman had none..
I do think this is largely to do with the quality of line and the flexibility of your rod compared to weight of sinker so it doesn’t necessarily show that one reel is better than the other..

My old man prefers the Torium HG and purely due to the reel being compact and slightly lighter than the saltist..
He fished with the old silver saltist from 2006 until 2014 when he made the change to the Torium HG.
He fished with the same 2. reels for 8 years of Henties trips and never had a issue besides having to upgrade the drag washers and yes the silver coating was non existent at the end, it looked worse for wear but still worked..
His Torium HG that’s been to Henties 5 years in a row now still looks brand new and works beautifully..
It’s a difficult call they are both great reels I’ve personally changed all my reels to Shimano but still have a hell of a lot of time for a Daiwa SL 30 due to the light spool..
All I’m saying is that it is so close and at the end of the day it’s what you feel most comfortable with, so take a rod put both reels on the reel seat and feel them out..
For me it’s the Torium HG although I absolutely detested the last torium model..

if edible fishing the 30 or 20 Daiwa and the 20 or even the 16 Torium imo .. 50 Daiwa and 30 Torium way too big unless you fish for both

ease of casting the Daiwa with brakes better but not always guaranteed to not have overruns.. older Toriums needed cutting and polishing and drag material changed for application it was liked for with the newer models drag material better

new Torium has VBS which is centrifugal braking helping in control of backlashes .. not much separating the 2 other than what u feel

Out-of-the-box, no mods required for the Torium 30 HG? (bush, bearing?, etc.)

have it immediately serviced and checked for bearing conversion as I'm not sure don't own the newer version still fish my older version.. put a bearing in spool cap to better balance spool.. had a gold Trini 20 also but left it standard.. one thing to keep in mind of the new Torium is it has a one piece frame much like the Trini A so tinkering with left side of reel not possible unless you strip the entire reel from the right side plate removing gear box etc just to inspect or oil left side bearing or grease ratchet etc.. not service friendly if you don't know the reel and will have to send it away for that

here the Daiwa is easier to operate better as left side plate can be removed.. both new models has AR- Bearings so no back movement in handle like the old Grandwaves / SLOSH and Speedmasters etc

new Toriums also has a bearing supported pinion which is a good selling point

New Toriums do not have a bearing supported pinion like the Trinidads do.
I know that the Shimano Australia website indicates that the reels have the same Super Free spool design, but they don't.
US website shows correct specs

Thanks Tackle-holic.

Is this a must-do mod or can it be done at a later stage? Can the Torium HG be fished out-of-the-box from new, or should mods first be applied before use?
