the best thing shimano made....was the reel cover for my saltiga 30.....lol.....*runs & goes & hides*
nah seriously now....im now a proud owner of a Shimano culcutta 700b reel *won it at the B/bash*...gonna be testing at the KZN social hopefully
other then that......nope no squibels bout my diawa's

I really LOVE my Shimanos, only thing that (potentially) sucks is spares availability in SA. A few months ago I had to bring spares into SA from Shimano UK direct for my Calcutta 400B (rather than wait at least 6 months for a little plastic levelwind gear to arrive in SA)........local importer/distributer needs to catch a wake up!
Never had any problems with my Calcutta 700S or the Spheros 8000. Also have a Daiwa Millionaire 300 that has never given the slightest problem.....
The quality of both Shimano and Daiwa is excellent, so any decisions will largely be personal preference and maybe aftersales support......

i HAD 2 TORIUM 30s had a really bad weekend in the transkei with them, if anything could go wrong they went wrong, big fish ceased the drag, reel got to hot even though water was put on it, the handle was backlashing, not holding, got very fustrated and sold both for 800.00 , but wont knock the reel other guys fished with them and landed great fish, maybe human error, i could be to blame i dont know, will own another one if i get a chance. what can i say im a tackle junkie

My saltist was destroyed at bluewaterbay a few weeks ago..using only toriums lately..but have seen a trindat 50 fail on the job at a venue as well..its like buying a car..you get the odd bad one in the bundle..doesnt make shimano and daiwa bad reels..i feel comfortable handling big fish on my shimano and other people with daiwa..still very good quality compared to the rest on the market

What is the quality on the Okuma compare to daiwa/shimano?and availability of spares..?
Having been awarded Saama clasifiaction as model areoplane instructor and building these planes costing 20 grand,I know quality.Nowdays I fix reels as a hobby-don`t care how far you can cast etc,but nothing comes to the qualit of Daiwa-soory for the brag,but I feel very pro Daiwa and i work on them all(almost as good as a penn)

Ordered my NEW bearings for my NEW Daiwa today, Next I will order my NEW drag washers for my NEW Daiwa. When I have finished doin this I recon I will order NEW casings for my NEW Daiwa as by this time the plastic sides will scratched to hell. Enough said!
On the other hand.......My 15 year old 20/40 and my 7year old Toriums are all going well!
