Hi Guys,

I went on Sunday to catch crayfish, and previous years have always caught, but this time caught NOTHING, guys were standing the whole day with nothing to show. I went to Rooiels.

Can anybody explain why this is so, and maybe suggest another spot.

Hi Jaweed,

I've been catching crayfish for the past 20 years in the cape and surroundings and have always come home with crayfish. It all depends on what method you using and how well you read the conditions. The problem with places like Rooiels, pringle bay, bettys bay etc is that the water conditions changes constantly. Crayfish are very afraid of sharks, octupus, squid and other bigger fish. 1 small shark or octupus will frighten the whole school of crayfish away. Very rough seas affect crayfishing as well.

One of the best spots for crayfish is Gifkommetjie in Cape Point. In my 20 odd years of crayfishing i always caught my quota here. The problem is the gate fee and the fact that you have to climb up a mountain when you done. Just the climb itself scares people away.

My 2 cents worth......

Hi Mohammad,

I at times go to Cape Point myself, and always catch there too, but also get my quota at Rooiels, also been doing it for years, just thought something else was at play.

Thanks

Hi Jaweed, quite a few guys struggled, even on the boats. If Rooi Els is off, then move around to the SE side of Pringle. Still were plenty there.
