Good day to you fisherman!

I am new to crayfishing and I have just purchased my East Coast Rock Lobster fishing licence from the post office (R94-00) but received no guidelines to use the licence.  Was reading a post on Night Fishing off a Kayak (Cape Town Kayak Fisherman) and it was mentioned here that fishing for Crayfish is only allowed from 8am-4pm (new regulation).  Just wondering if this is the case for us here in Durban or can I use my licence to fish for them during the night.

I bought my licence with the intention to target them at night with the use of baited hooks.  Please advise if I can target them using this method at night because if I cannot, I will have to look at an alternate way of fishing for them.

Thank you!

According to the Marine Recreational Activity Information Brochure for 2010/2011 there is no time specification on catching East coast Rock Lobster, but for the west coast rock lobster, the times mentioned is clearly specified (been that way a couple of years now already).

It does state: No person shall engage in fishing, collecting or disturbing east coast rock lobster with the use of a vessel - so if you were planning on using a kayak or boat - don't do it.

Best is to ask any MCM employee, just to be on the safe side.

Hi Barte, Pringle and Cracker Jack

Thanks for the reply guys!  Much Appreciated!

Barte - You are spot on!  Called the KZN Wildlife Office (031 274 1150), before I could read your response and spoke to an officer who confirmed what you noted.  Thanks for the heads up on not fishing for them off my paddle ski!  Anyways,  stopped fishing off my paddle ski for years now cause I used to paddle alone and I realized that it was unsafe to be alone on the water.

I will have to go back to the post office and ask/demand for the 'permit holding regulations' which should have been issued (according to the KZN Wildlife officer) with my licence so that I am within the law.

Will keep you updated on my cray fishing (learning) and maybe some nice pics of decent crays.

Take care while enjoying our fantastic sport!

Frankenfish,

I have the Goggles, Snorkels, Flippers, wetsuit and gloves (to use on the rocks) but am terrified of the tax man getting to nibble on me in deep water.

I would like to try and snorkel for them on a spring low!  If you do have experience in snorkeling for them and would like to teach me then I would like to join you on such an expedition.
