Connecting a GPSmap76S to a Lowrance HDS 5x

Hi All

I wonder if there is somebody who will be able to help me, I got a Lowrance HDS5x (no Gps) and a Garmin GPSmap 76S that I want to connect to each other the book say you can but I dont understand how...I got all the serial cable for both units please help me..

Hi Jess,

I have not tried it personally, but I would imagine that you would need to do it through the NMEA0183 data transfer system.

You will however not be able to view GPS / Chart Plotter data on the HDS5x as it is sonar ONLY (50/83/200kH and Side Scan and Down Scan 455 / 800kHz compatible).

What you can do is use the new Track Back feature and create way points that would be sent via NMEA0183 to your Garmin.

You will need to use the RS232 Transfer Data (TX) data cable of either comm 1 or comm 2 to send this data to the Garmin.

I suggest using comm 1 = yellow.

On the Garmin side you will need the data in connection (white).  Join these two (lowrance yellow and garmin white), the lowrance silver shield (ground) to the Garmin black, enable NMEA0183 on both units (waypoint sharing), and you will be good to go.

Almost made an AHole of myself cause I didn't look at the drawings properly !

Rx = receive (in)
Tx = transmit (out)
If the one device sends the other must receive

So RX on unit a connects to TX on unit b
And TX on unit a connects to RX on init b
(Remember that and you'll always know how to do it)

So
Lowrance yellow (TX) to garmin white (RX)
Lowrange orange (RX) to garmin brown (TX)

U need to be able to transmit and receive on both units, if it doesn't work like that then both companies have broken the rules (standards) on data transmission

All data is broken up into chunks called packets and then send from unit a, unit b receives the packets AND has to acknowledge that every packet was received and that's why RX and TX is needed on both units

For the IT guys, its basically a crossover cable
