Hi guys

does anyone know of a coffee grinder that can throw as far as penn reels

and does the line thickness matter on coffee grinders looking tocthrow at least 60m

Hallo Nash. I think before you start buying a reel: first indicate what fish you are going to target, and what rod you are going to use. But to answer the question Yes there are grinders that will reach the same distance as penn reels, and Yes line thickness matters. Just remember its not the reel and rod that casts far, but the guy behind them. there are just combinations that suits distance casting better than others.

I am looking for a reel that can handle the sea sand

i will be target edibles ideally grunter and salmon

i am currently fishing with grandwave 50 but i want to keep this for rock fishing

too much sea sand making it look older than it really is

Hi Nash

I have fished with Gandwaves for many years, oldest is 8 years old. If you can cast with it then rather stay with it. If you change to a coffee grinder you are looking for problems if you say the sand is getting into the reel. I will use a penn type reel long before a coffee grinder in sandy conditions. Use a Grandwave properly and it will work for many years;
  1. Never let you reel fall/lie in the sand, always use a sand spike/ pension pipe to keep the reel out of the sand. This will help even when the wind is blowing sand.[/*]
  2. If you do get a bit of sand in the reel whilst fishing just wash the reel off with some clean sea water. This will wash the sand out of the area where the spool and frame meet and it will not grind.[/*]
  3. ALWAYS, ALWAYS rinse your reels in warm water (with the drag tight) when you come back from the beach, every time, no exceptions. Let the reel dry before you pack it away.[/*]
  4. Depending on how often you fish service the reel. If you do not feel comfortable doing this then get it done at a good tackle shop. It is not that expensive and will save you money in the long run.[/*]
  5. When storing your reel remember to loosen the drag. This will stop the drag washers from compressing.[/*]
I have in my 50+ years had to throw away more than 20 coffee grinders because unless you are going to spend big bucks on a top of the range model they will never last as long as a penn type of reel. The cheap to midrange ones are salt sensitive, to say the least.
I have spend three days swimming with a Grandwave, serviced it and it worked perfectly the next day and still does.

The new top of the range coffee grinders are fantastic reels, can cast very well and will pull most fish but are very costly, you pay for what you get.
