COF questions

Hi Guys,

Ok so I'm finally going to do my skippers next week but I also need to get the COF sorted for my rubber duck I have a few questions

1. My life jackets that I have are the normal over the neck type for over 32kg and have a SABS mark on them however I dont think they have a SAMSA mark on them they were manufactured in 2000 to 2004, will I need to buy new ones or will these suffice as they are in a very good condition.

2. When do I get the SR number and how do I do the COF if my equipment is not marked with a SR number?

3. My boat doesn't have a buoyancy certificate however its a rubber duck, who can issue me with a certificate in the vaal area?

Your Lifejackets are fine. Depending on the length of the boat you will need a certain amount of jackets. 4m boat, 4 jackets, 5.3m, 5 jackets. Basically a jacket per metre.

Not sure what an SR nr is but would assume you are referring to your registration nr. It is issued when you do your COF if you don't already have one.

You don't need a buoyancy certificate for a duck as long as it has 3 or more compartments.

Lifejackets should be fine. Boat name is written on mine not SR number.

You need the correct number of lifejackets as per the COF. My boat is registered for 5 persons for cat C(offshore sea) and 7 persons for Cat R(protected waters/dams rivers etc.)

Technically speaking if I launch for an offshore fishing trip with 3 people on board I still need to have 5 life jackets on board and likewise for freshwater.(I need all 7 on the boat as per COF)

Hi guys thanks for the advice,

My boat flew through the COF and bouancy without any issues ::slr::

Also did my Skippers and am now finally legal

Now its time to catch some fish :cool:
