Cobbel-tunnel syndrome !

I’ve been eyeing the weather for the last couple of days and it was amazing to see how many South Easters (SE) we’ve been having during the heart of winter. Last week, 18 June 2012 – 21 June 2012 saw the SE’s coming through strong and consistent, the swell was below three metres and the water temperature was between 15-17 degrees Celsius.

I was really tempted to seek the elusive winter Cob with these “ideal” conditions ! Rigged with the freshest Fish bait, Chokka, Bloodworm and prawn we head to our regular Cob spots in the hope of soliciting a bite from one of these critters.

We get to our spot just before high tide (17:07) and we on immediately with huge enquiries !! Rods bouncing up and down, drags pulling! There’s action in the water! A few locals fish next to us with red bait and get rewarded with a Galjoen and Kolstert of note ! They were barely casting 20m !!

“Winter Cob, Winter Cob! “ Is all that keeps repeating in my mind!! I decide to stick to my decision even if it means blanking! The bait of choice was a thin slither of Chokka and loads of patience! If catching Leopard Sharks and Seven striped Cat sharks were a competition, I would have won first prize!

Haroun gets a decent pick-up just after sunset, nice Cob of 55cm! Now our minds are set for Cob!! We persevere for about 2 hours after sunset but only cat sharks! We decide to head back to our low water spot and make a fire for a quick sausage braai and then we’re on for another Cob session!

It’s quiet by me, with on Sea Barbel making a showing! While Haroun keeps getting descent pulls!!?? Wasn’t long before his rod went down, but he told me that it was a shark??!! I told him to play it as if it was a fish and to our surprise, it was another Cobbie of 50cm!! Although the water was starting to turn in our favour, we decided to pack-up as it was already 2am!!
