Close encounter with a predatory type!

Thanks Johan,

I can recommend a book called "Dive South Africa". They don't sugar coat the reality of the "tax man". Two things that stood out to me were some observations made by the writer of a chapter on diving with sharks. The first was diving up at Aliwal with tiger sharks. The Sharks were quite aggressive that day, but were more aggressive with the divers wearing short summer suits.
The other was another dive up there. The writer was recovering from a tummy bug and was not in tip top form to begin with. When the sharks arrived on the scene, they seemed to single him out as the "Weaker" one... He soon gout of the water...

Sharks are a reality we face every time, but flip its awesome under the water.

Cheers,
L

About Sharks:
encounters of the toothy variety are everyone's nightmare... I know that we all have a large portion of fear when it comes to meeting the oceans apex predator but to a large extent the fear is unrealistic (I think- I'm not saying I don't have fear... I'm always thinking about it the night before I head off on a boat...). during all your diving you will probably only have a few encounters with sharks that are capable of eating you... hear around the Cape you are looking at the White, Bull/Zambezi (from infanta)... but Cape Spearo is right... the shark you see probably wont be so interested in eating you, maybe taking a nibble! I have only had one encounter with a bull shark and it checked me out and just carried on swimming...
sharks are inquisitive and the best advice i got was not to behave like prey..aka don't bolt, make sudden movements... it sounds all logical until you are in a situation where you are facing something that is looking at you the way you look at a nice steak....

in Cape Town , unless you dive Millers most of the dives are in kelp... I don't think there's much to worry about but then again there's always a chance, we are in their environment... I've never felt so slow in the water as the time I was hassled by a Raggie up in the Transkei....but I remained calm and pushed him off me a 4 times and then I managed to put my spear back and poke him with my spear which sent him off...

be safe, dive with a buddy....get a sharkshield (there are different opinions about these machines)... but you will need to learn how to cope with the fear... respect things that can eat you...

I've never used a banger, I have one but I've also never dived with it....
