Hi All,

I need clarity on the following issues:

1) What is the regulation regarding snapper salmon caught from the surf in KZN? The MCM guidelines mention 1 Kob of 600mm per day whereas the snapper only grows to 400mm and is a different species.

2) What is the requirement for a cast net licence ie. can the the cast be also used in an estuary or is another cast net licence required?

3) Where can a general bait licence be purchased, and what is deemed as general bait?

Please try and clear this up as there is a lot of misconceptions at present.

I have contacted the Kzn wildlife Authority regarding your question. Below you will find the response I received via email from a Marine Permit Officer. I trust this helps...

 1. Snapper salmon has no size limit but forms part of the total daily bag limit of 10 fish per person per day. 5 kob may be caught per person per day from a boat at sea in KZN. Only 1 may be bigger than 110cm. In KZN only 1 kob may be caught from the shore, harbour,estuary with a minimum size limit of 60cm.

2. A cast net is issued for the open sea only.  Should you require an estuary it would depend if that specific estuary is availabe or not.Conserved and sensitive sites are not availabe. Other estuaries are issued on a quota system. Should the estuarie be available then it would be endorsed on your permit. Only the KZN Wildlife offices have the authority to endorse permits with estuaries.


3.The "general bait" permit is actually the code 9 - mollusc permit. This permit is only available from our KZN Wildlife offices i.e Marine Permit Office in Durban, Umlalazi,Richards Bay,Maphelana,Cape Vidal, St.Lucia and  Mpenjati Nature Reserves.

The only bait that you are allowed to take in KZN is the following:

15 Ghost & Rock Crabs

15 Limpets

2kg Red Bait

20 Sea Cucumber

20 Sea Urchins

2 Octopus

50 Mud/sand prawns

30 Sea Lice (Mole Crab)
