Circle hooks for edibles

Hi DJP.

I am a conservationist by heart, instilled during 25 years of fly fishing.
I am really trying to do the right thing here, however not hooking fish when it flattens me due to a circle is just 'not cricket'.

I do believe that I will be fishing J-hooks for small edibles and circles when I fish a much bigger baits with a dangle. The point being that the rod with the bigger bait is placed in the rod holder and the smaller edible rod I hold all the time. So chances of gut hooking is very slim.

Thank you again for your insight and contribution, much appreciated.

I use this concept for my hook. I like that you can "secure" your bait higher up without the issue of the bait sliding down into the hook's base and maybe "hide" the circle hooks point.

Also fishing the right size hooks makes a huge difference, a circle too small for the job will gut hook often just like a j hook.. but sometimes ja ..biggest elf I saw come out last year in lockdown, LOL, was about 7-9 kg I think caught by someone trying for blacktail with a little circle in the corner of the scissor and how he did not bite that guy off in that monumental 30 min fight while he thought he had a huge cob on...I dont know. But that guy landed that fish..Huge slab the size and length of my leg and Im over 6 foot..anyway..I have a right hook for each application..I like to hook the fish in the scissor and release most fish, most time I dont gut hook, sometimes geelbekking in the deep I do with a huge kendal. But circles work well for me for tuna, live baiting in general, grunters with fine wire circle, and bottom fishing for bek etc..otherwise different size kendals are best, trebles for lure and size the match the fish, little ones, or small singles for leeries so not to poke their eyes out or pop them, and not break the mouth or gills and hook outside the mouth, big trebles for lure fishing for bigger species of fish most likely being released into vacuum packs in my freezer..Gallies are a whole other animal, I have my best best best hook but it rusts and the uber sharp point chips after a few casts or fish and must be replaced and are stupid expensive and its actually a jigging hook halfways between a circle and J, very short shank circle shape but no inwards curving tip..for an elf nothing beats a large kendal, same with cracker..though circles can do the job quite fine.
My mate has a secret rig with 2 x 1/0 or 2/0 kendal rounds that he fishes for monster cracker and steenies each season, for photo and release specifically..and he catches them one hook in each scissor and walks them in like a dog on a lead with 10kg line..LOL big 15kg plus things..it is all an art..best learn from the artists, go for a day with a pro, or watch their vids on youtube..catch and release for the win, sustainable harvest of quick to live and reproduce species for the win..one time bro..
