The time has come for me to buy myself a new surf rod. My old one was a 400/2 purglass and I enjoyed it very much. I need some opinios from people as to what I should upgrade to. Are the new rods built by Penn, Loomis and Franklin, Shimano etc good options for our surf conditions or should I stick with the tried and tested rods from Gremlins, Kingfisher or Basil Manning? I see that Penn have brought out a HMG rod at a very competitive price, what do you guys think?

Hi there the production rods are not bad at all the shimano exage has a decent set up i used the heavy tip most of the time and cast a 7 ounce with a relatively big bait with ease , it has large eyes so leaders are not a prob up to .9mm.But these rods dont come very cheap either ,a custom built rod can cost anything between 2 grand a nd up so if you have the bucks go personalise youself a blank they all come from the same place anyway (blue marlin)Gremlins is my first option speak to brendon or rob gavin 039-3173233 tell him Don from Langebaan refered you you might get lucky with a discount.

I have just purchashed a Loomis & Franklin and i must say it is an awsome rod and i am having great fun with it. I am using the medium tip at the moment using a 6oz sinker with a full sard and i have no problem casting it I will be using the heavy tip soon just got to get use to it..

Thanks for the reply. I suppose its always a good idea to go with what you know. These days there are too many choices and it all gets a bit confusing. A 400/3 may be a good idea because the 9/10 ounce sinkers were a bit heavy for my last rod.

Purglass 400/3 is rated 7-8ounce - I use 7 ounce when throwing small baits, and only use 8 ounce when sliding. My 400/3 is my favourite, and goes with me on each outing. It's nice and sensitive for small edds + can take the punch with big (50-100kg) non-edds. You can't go wrong!
