Chokka

Hi Guys

After the last comp at the Tugela mouth some of the guys were discussing the different prices we paid for Chokka. The average price during that week was around R85.00 per kilogram.

I have since that time did some investigation. The guys in the Cape at the Wholesalers normally retail the fishing bait chokka ( they call it Dirty Squid) around R15.00 per kilogram. However the companies I spoke to have airtight contracts with the Durban Suppliers. The same situation out of Mozambique.

Another interesting point is that a cleaned squid steak frozen at P/Pay for Human Consumption sells for R58.00 per kilogram----no waste/tentacles etc

Also a few months ago I purchased a small bait board from a tackle shop and paid R35 for it.  A weeks after that whilst shopping at Woolworth's I noticed a similar Board , exact size for veg's etc with an anti-bacterial finish for R25.

I think that as fishermen/women we are getting ripped of and we need to be a bit more selective.

Just watch the prices..I know many of us are eager to get lines in the water but these tackle guys need to know we are watching....from R15 per kilo from the wholesaler to R85 ..that is one big jump for no real work except for transport and freezer space.

Regards

I second what you say i have a sugesion why dont we as sealine members post where and what we think were good prices we payed for any items eg bait etc..maybe in that way we will start to support the guys who's prices are competitable and not out ragiously priced.

I hope we can get this thing going maybe even start a sealine consumer fishing watch so to say.It would be a great resarch tool to us as fisherman to monitor the retail prices of products..

What do you think?

There is a place here in Brooklyn CT I pay R45 / kilo of "dirty" squid, but always in excellent condition - ice white

Wheres about do you find that R15/kilo wholesalers here in CT? I have yet to find one of them?

Well in durban its hard to find good bait cheap. What i have started doing is trying the seafood shops they dont stock everything but what they do have is excellent and the prices are far better then the tackle shops.

For example prwns and squid are almos half the price compared to all tackle shops and the quality is far superior then the ordinary yellow box junk that you get in tackle shops.

Try out a few in yur area im sure youll be suprised to find what they have.

Hi Guys

I tend to agree with Riymos..I have yesterday checked out some of the local fish supply shops in the CHatsworth area and noticed that their prices are between 25 to 35 percent cheaper that the tackle shops..

So we just need some the Expert Salt Water Angler to try them out..maybe they are not as fresh etc..but from an inexperienced eye they seem ok.

Hi dalkil

It was a place in Hout Bay Called Fishies Wholesale.. But the guy said that he will not sell anywhere because he a firm contract to supply a company in Durban. However please give details of the place you buy from as it still better than paying R85 per kilo.

hi all

average price for chokka at the Tackle shops in cape town is around R35/Kg - (that's nice Chokka) - you can get some at Kalk bay Harbour too for around R20 - R25 per Kilo - you could also catch some fairly easily from the harbour wall :D ( Chokka jig and some patience)

i agree, i usually pay R35.00per  kg for chokka, but this past weekend i ended up paying R52.00 for a kg of chokka at Fishing Specialists.

it was good chokka, but i could not believe the price. Mozambican chokka is also lekker, but available from Durban

If you are in CT and need bait, give me a call or e me on robb@breco.co.za , we import and export seafood, and I have some good contacts from time to time. The truth about our local chokka is that the boat price in PE and J Bay is R58.00 per kg. That is for jig caught, seafrozen packed for export product. Then you can buy trawl caught, which is a lot cheaper, I look after my mates at about R20.00 per kg. Its awesome bait, the only diff is that the membrane has been rubbed off against the trawl net and other fish in the net. Its perfect for bait, and is usually packed in 5kg boxes. Dont bother with the steaks from PnP, its very soft and tasteless, it is cut from the giant dosidicus specie from South America and put thru lots of chemicals to make it edible. Stick with our local loligo specie. My number is 0832580707. I can also organise Sardines in 5kg boxes, we generally always have stock, and have a little retail shop in Montague Gardens.

Hi Rob,

Those prices are awesome! Do you ship to Durban area at all? Is there a possibilty that the Durban boys can benefit to some extent from your generous offer?

Howzit guys

We supply all the wholesalers across the country, so I would supply someone in your area like Bluewater Products, and you could buy from them. Phone Greg 031 3051272.
