I slide with 7, 8 and 9oz sinkers, and they all work.
my slide of choice is a 3/4 elf.

The SS wires are stock standard length.
I use .52 main line and either 1.0mm or 1.6mm wind-on leaders, about 10m long.

Just make sure the non return reaches the stopper.

Ah Well - I'm already fighting something else- Brankruptcy.

Gonna go Look for a sliding sinker , Will be in bloem tomorrow - will have some time to go and do some secret shopping without mommy giving me the oog .

so Basically That sucker must be pretty stuck in the sand and after that it's game on to play . I think the wires came loose which is why she broke free .

I remembered reading somewhere about hurting the line when you stand in one spot , so ja , I Know what you mean about stressing the Line .
Thanks guys .Thank you .

Speak for yourself bud!and sorry for giving you info you needed to be rescued from!

Skrops, some good info there. Your post proves that what works for one doesn't neccesarily work for another. Half of what you said is not practised on cape Town and the whole sliding process differs for different conditions. For instance in choppy conditions(waves are tightly packed) we would only shake till the bait gets past the first set of waves then we put the rod tip on the ground and let the rip take the slide out. That of course is completely different to "normal" surf conditions where I would only shake till the slide dissappears under the surface the I put my rodd in the stand and wait 5 minutes before shaking vigorously to make sure the slide clears the leader knot.

Ok - While I was away in the Free state trying to earn some bucks I Noticed some people were trying to take each other out on my Post .

Syl - This was Not a Direct slap in your face , or aimed in any fashion against you .Not at all . I Value your input as much as Anybody elses boet , regardless of where you Live - and when I spoke about us souties living along the coast- I actually WAS referring to me - Not in any way about yourself . I would Never Knock anyone's advice on this forum ,so , My Apologies Sir . I want This to be understoon as I feel bad about you guys (not sure exactly who ) at each other .

As for Skrops helping me- He has helped me in the passed , and Like any other member on this forum I value his input as much as I value Yours .

I really do not want to start asking questions and have guys Trying to Moer each other  Over One Of my answers , or questions .

so My apologies to all those parties involved .  Any and all Info , as always , is Welcome .

china I been living along the coast all My Life - and I've Never Bothered to slide for something .
It's Only Now that I am getting fed up of Not being able to catch edibles that I am turning my sights to Sharks - ffs - I live in Mossel Bay - we have PLenty ...

Not that sliding to catch sharks is an Easier than catching edibles - On the contrary - I think it's even bloody harder !.
go figure ....

sO the rod is wiggled back and forth , or forwards and backwards . Not far though I take it ?
Why Not side to side - Is there a specific reason we "hop" it down the Line - By back n Forth Motion and not wiggling the road tip Left Right ? Is it because the CLip Needs to sort of "hop" down the line to the stopper ring ?

I would also assume the art of sliding becomes Easier when a: One's sinker sits , and B : you are able to walk up to higher ground and shake from up there . ?

I am going to give it nother shot this weekend . Aprt from the knk , I am practically bored out of my SKull .

slid out a whole Mackie On Saturday .
mmmm.Ok all truth in the rumour - sinker weight not so important .
Ok . Here's My question Now : I broke off the bloody Leader and the sinker including losing the Mackie and my whole sliding rig , because I left out the sinker for 5 hours !!!!!!!!!!

Trying to pull out the sinker after so long was a bllody Nightmare . it sit VAS !!!!!!!!!!

So - Is there any given time perios Needed to pull it lose - or should i periodicaly reel in and re-set the sinker ?????

Going from one extreme to another Now!! first I couldn't it to set- now it set too WELL !!!! Lolololol !!!!

This is hilariously good fun though !!! Lolol !!

I would check the slide after 30-45 minutes with the first bait of the day. If the bait is still fresh and bloody then leave the next bait in for an hour. I tend to max out a bait at 1,5hrs. Then again I do have some super cotton that could squeeze blood out of a stone!

...also when pulling the sinker to release it, don't jerk the line just lean back on the stick and let it do the work for you.

Sylvester - I pulled back - and Pooonk - snapped !!
I was considering going for thicker line - but it makes no sense to .. what is the recommended line thickness you guys would use then ??
Psy wants to put on 23 kg Line on , and I am a bit against this . I'd prefer touse just a good mono Line , than go for cheap thickness .
anyone got some ideas ?
We are both New to the sliding game , and were delighted to see a bloke pull 0ut a nice fat raggie from the beach , well i never.....

I tell you - the term" leave the sinker for a bit til it settles " took on new meaning on Saturday- bloody HELL that thing sat Vas like I couldn't believe !!!!!!!!!! ha ha Ha Ha !!

5 Hours in the water Not even a wink of a bite . too much brake fluid over the leader if you ask me ....

But good fun . We both Now fish with two rods . I really enjoy the whole idea of targeting two different types frm one beach .
tell me - having something that large hanging in the water- it would obviously Lure other fish closer to the shore ?correct ?
and , when luring lurkies to the shoreline - does it scare off the other species of edibles or Not ??

Would any of you have any solid objections starting me out on an sl 50 instead of something exotic ?
I also have the saltist , who's ratio I believe firmly to be too high to use for this , and then a Torium that I sdecided to buy . Never been used , brand spanking , with 18.1 .45mm on .
Will either one work for now until I win the lotto ??

The whole WP league fishes with Toriums (well almost, forgive the poetic licence)!!!!....and we catch more fish than any other league in the country......ok I'm waiting for the shit storm!
We use 0.9/1mm and some guys even go as high as 1.2mm leader. Be sure to use at least 200mm of 150lb steel at the bottom of your leader(where it attaches to the stopper ring). I use minimum 0.8mm sinker snoot. Here's a tip....never piss up a flag pole...ROFL!!!.....no seriously leave the rod in the pension pipe after shaking for 10-15 minutes then go back to it after 20 minutes and give it another violent shake. This is to stop the slide getting stuck on the leader knot which is more than likely what happened to yours, the slide would chow that piece of mainline quick sticks!

whan you say 200mm - so you mean the last bit that you attach to the stopper ring must be steel trace .

what about the 1.3 mm LEADER that i got as a gift and have now pissed into the ocean through my own brilliance ??????? would that not be strong enough for , say - umm-- an 80 Kg shark ?? Lord Knows I'm not only targeting them , but I just dont see myself having the luck of a chinaman and pulling my first shark 100kg Plus . ( my crystal ball working overtime again )

 Normal Line , Leader , 200mm 150lb steel .   In that order then ?

I must say I've lost a little bit of confidence now After having the line snap - It might just have been that the line i was using was up to maggots though . Losing sinker an all an all is just not a lekka feeling .

So the torium will be fine .

good . thought as much . Nice to have's like Trini's and Dc are great ................. when the budget allows and the people are buying cars . Right now - it aint happening .

Leader is only there for abrasion resistance, your mainline is going to snap long before your leader! Your 1.3mm leader is fine and yes your order is correct! very last bit against the stopper must be steel(there are differing opinions but rather safe than pregnant!)

No No - my 1.3 mm Leader WAS fine - I donated that to the boggomsbaai diving club , remember ....

so , Now I gots to go buy another one .
Knots for the steel trace mon capitan ???

Also - answer my quessie about the fishing two species bit - Lees bo man .

I wanna know if the Mackie acts as a kind of lokaas No matter whether it's for cob or steenbras or other small fioshies or .... etc etc .

Ja sly I reckon I used the same line we used at st francis -was dicey from the word go in any case- i somehow dont Know what the bloody HELL i was thinking using that , but nou ja ....It's too late to cry if the girls already 3 months pregnant ...........Lololol !!! too late she cried , too late too late too late .....

Mackies are good for what shraks exactly ??

Buy the 1mm T-line, R29/100m - excellent quality. As for your big bait attracting other fish, your guess is as good as mine on that front.

Knot for steel to leader, I use back to back Fig 8's. Some guys will say use a swivel but I believe the fewer swivels the better.

I am not qualified to predict species for bait in your area. I do know that when in Struis we picked up Bronzies and Raggies on mackerel (beutiful fresh on ice supplied by Pro Bait)......not to mention a certain Swart Pylie that owes me 2,5hrs of my life.....that score WILL be settled!

How the hell could i fish for 4 hours solid and not have something try out my takeaway ?????????

....sometimes (often) there's nobody home!

The best way to get a pull is to fish the conditions not the history. The best way to spot the conditions is to fish with the experienced guys and steal with your eye's, thats what I do. Then it's a simple matter of sifting fact from bull and you're away! The two guys I fished 90% of this season with have taught me a moerse lot about conditions! Gunther, Hennie if you read this you okes are AWESOME!!!! Technique is very important as well but often a crap setup and good conditions will give you better results than the best setup in crap conditions. I am lucky to have a friend like See Monster that took me under his wing and showed me the ropes, you must get yourself a professor to help you learn the ropes quicker!
