Buckled... this year they limited everyone to .55mm minimum line and Minimum 0.90 leaders... makes distance casting a lot more difficult, also the casting trials don't count a heck of a lot towards the final points. There is a narrow track 20m wide that you have to land in for your cast to count - outside the markers and you're disqualified...
The bait casting was with a piece of tyre (if I'm not mistaken), any sinker you want, also within markers.
Mohammed is a member of SEALINE, I think he took part and came in the top 10 somewhere - he'll be able to give more insight into it.

Structure and procedures for the casting trails:
There will be three casting points:
Distance Casting (Sliding)
Two casts only, your sinker to land with in the indicated lane.
Minimum line thickness allowed will be 0.50mm in the line of your choice.
Sinker cast only (sinker weight of your choice)
Minimum Leader line thickness allowed 0,9 mm (Any brand)
Only to use tackle you would fish with, like you would use to put a slide out.
With over runs (kraaines or bunch) the distance will be taken where the sinker lands, provided it’s in the lane.
Cast off’s (when the line parts) will = 0
Bait Casting Simulation (Bait)
Two casts only, your sinker and bait to land in 20m radius of a predetermined distance.
Line thickness of your choice.
Sinker weight of your choice.
Bait substitute will be provided (please return it for the next trials)
Leader line of your choice.
You are to use tackle of your choice that you would fish with.
Accuracy Casting (Scratching)
One cast only, your sinker to land in 10m radius of a predetermined distance, the closer to the object the higher the score.
NO Practicing at the casting points!!!!
Line thickness of your choice.
Sinker only (weight of your choice).
Leader line of your choice.
Use tackle of your choice that you would fish with. (No Coffee Grinders allowed for the seniors)

As far as the distance casting goes, it's not about how far you can cast, but how consistant you are. Its pointless casting 170m on your 1st throw and bunching up on your 2nd. Your average will only be 85m. This is why fishing is more brains then power.....
I averaged 124m and came out 10th, but I can cast 150m if I want with more chances of having a bunchup..

Ja, anyone stuck in the old Transvaal is as good as a convict. Not even the Vaaldam can relieve the pain and longing for the sea.
My coment about the distance casting was more tougne in cheek as a few months ago there was a post about the same thing and some of the distances people think that they through as opposed to what they actually do. I have never measured a cast so got no idea but maybe I will buy one of those distance meters and have a few casts to see for interest sake only.
Hey Buckled... here's a story... 2 weekends ago, I was practising casting at a dam at club meeting in JHB. I had a line meter on, so could measure reasonably accurately how far I was throwing... being a learner, I thought I was doing quite well at 110-120m. AD on this forum, x Provincial angler Adrian Fynn, came and stood next to me, casting 0.55mm and 1.2mm leader, 7oz sinker... 1st cast was maybe 150m. 2nd was at least 180m, and 3rd cast nearly hit the bank on the other side of Leeukop dam, which is almost 200m - with 0.55?!?! These okes are amazing... and maybe you just as good...

I know Adrian from his days in KZN spent on North Pier catching Greys and swimming them for the zambezies, hav'nt seen him for ages. Fished with him in a club caled coranation angling club many moons ago, good to hear he is still fishing as he was a master. A quick story about him I will never forget. One afternoon on North pier it was dead on stroles AD says he is going to catch a grey and swim it we all laugh and say he is wasting his time. AD has one through not 5 min later he hooks a grey, pins it and in a short space of time is hooked into a zambo and we all were still waiting for our first bite. I do not remember wether he landed it or not but that fish was obviously waiting for his bait.

Hey Buckled!...just to set the record straight on that day I hooked that Zambie....I lost it....threw another sard cutlet out and caught another grey...swam it as well....got picked up and was smacked 6 - love and lost it....the other guys were still twiddling their thumbs...yep, the good old days...
