hi guys

any 1 been to tago recently? any luck on some big barbel there recently?
if so any tips on distances, where about to sit, baits etc.
going to tago end of this month any help is appreciated.

welcome bud, went 3weeks ago, nothing major but it then again it was my first time there. so i didn't know the conditions etc. was a good learning curve for me. hoping to go next weekend again but it looks like its going to rain, so busy keeping an eye on that. When i was there i used live bait, Carp fillet, Carp head, Day old Chick, Platanna,s the only cat i got was on a plattie.

Thanks for the help.. if u go next week please could you let me know how it goes, and post some pics please.. where can i get day old chicks, many people have told me that its good bait for barbel but i dont know where to get them?

Welcome to sealine. Great to see a new face :)

Do you have any info on the location, structure, depth etc. Will help us to help you. Lol.

But basic baits are as mission said. I've never fished there, but carp seems to be the flavour. I'd try heads and fillets, depending on tackle, also half a carp. Day olds are a fantastic bait in most waters. What setup are you using?

well i have been there a few times but havent had much luck. i normally sit on the members side however from what i have heard the sloep area is the place to be as the water gets really deep and apparently in that area there are some huge barbel and carp. I have asked zorro the owner there if i can sit at the sloep when i go and he said its fine, so hopefully this time i will be more successful
than the last time

just wanted to ask if any 1 has some tips on feeding spots? i am going to tago from friday around 3pm until sunday around 5 pm, so i would like to make a feeding area, any suggestions on how to make a good feeding spot and wat to use?

Did PM'ed you back. If you want to target the big snorre I would advise you to stay away from making a feeding spot as this will only lure the smaller Catz to your spot and it seems like the big Boyz don't like this commotion. Rather try and establish the waters flow and get a sent trail in the water that passes past some deep drop offs or some lekker structures. This way you will lure the big boyz out of there hiding places. Use big baits such as fish heads etc. Day olds and Platties are also 100%. The Vaal's tekkie bekke like Muddy and Crass Carp heads so try and get a few before hand. Especially Muddy heads. As I mentioned to you in the PM it seems the old river bed is lying about 200 - 230 meters out or there is nice structures or a deep drop off. What ever it is I would try to get my baits out there.

Thank you for the pm skuimkop, very interesting , the behaviour of the cats.. i will try your tips and try to get my bait out to that distance and try the carp and muddy heads...

As Skuimkop said,  the deep water at Tago (members side from no 40 - 70) is good 200 m from side. There are two problems while trying to retrieve from that distance. First one there is huge amount of old lines with sinkers at the floor and you will get caught on them. The second one is the steep drop  and small angle of your line which may get your sinker and hook stuck to it. 
What I do . When we arrive first I drop cow licking block ( 25 kg -cost  R 110.00) around 120-150 from shore with marker ( there is only around 3m depth at that distance) .  That attracts all fish ( starts working  app. after 6 hrs) and barbel too but does not feed them. Then for barbel I use different tactics but only while dark ( it does not seem to work during the day).
 As bigger Platanna the better. I attach 500ml plastic bottle - see throw (closed) as a float and attach the hook with 30 cm leader to it . Also slightly heavier sliding sinker to prevent Platanna from moving it.
Platanna will try all the time to climb to the bottle while bottle will turn and turn. Those  movements and vibrations with splashes  will make barbel to come to surface to investigate.  Also random winds of your reel for few meters will wake up frog and she will start swimming again. By the way it also keeps frog live indefinitely as she is on surface all the time.
This way I  caught  quite a few but not over 10 kg. 
Also to mention this technique works only if no wind or very mild wind - no waves.
