Catch and Release

I will be making my usual trip down to the coast and just wandered what the general feeling or consensus was regarding catch and release.Should we take our limit or limit our catch.

Search this site. Has been discussed/fought about often. Why always catch your limit. Keep what you need and release the rest. As easy as that. As it is going in False Bay for the past week you will be lucky to reach your limit.

Frozen fish is yuck.If you can't eat it or give it to someone who can (and can't catch their own)then release.

Reason for my post is that during the silly season I can already see posts of fish where they are being held in the gills or are dead. Many people congratulating the posters. Just thought I could remind myself and others to release if not going to be eaten immediately.

You must also remember that if someone wants to keep a fish and they are within the law then so be it. (Don't shoot somebody down for keeping what they want when they want as long as it is legal)

Also on the flip side a lot of people only fish for the sport and don't eat fish or are a lot more conservation minded than others. (Don't shoot somebody down for believing in what they believe)

What I am trying to say is respect each others opinions and beliefs and rather congratulate the individual on either the catch and release or on keeping the fish that they want rather than offending someone by belittling them.

I think it also has alot to do with the species. Take your four Shad and nobody will raise an eyebrow but take four black musselcracker or Sailfish etc and the temperatures will begin to rise.Fishing ethics are up to the individual and will vary from the rabid to the reckless.

I live in Gauteng and am only in Cape Town 3 weeks every few years. I plan to take about 3 cob and 3 elf back with me. Would have loved to get a few galjoen(will come back when they in season). But the cob and the elf will do. Maybe even white stump or two. Any more than that will be released.

I can remember not so long ago we got shouted at by other anglers for releasing Kingies at Mapelane, they said if we didn't want them they did. The pendulum swings ?

Plugger.........on the money, depends on the specie, for example, the big Dusky Kobs should ALWAYS be released, I say should for a reason. Again, it depends on the angler, but I still cannot help myself when it comes to emphasizing the importance of releasing these breeding fish. Recent stats indicated that this specie was down to 4% of its original breeding stock. The fish only reach sexual maturity at around 7 years / 10 kg's. But then again we still see pictures of dead fish on the site. I'm not critisizing anynone, please understand that, I am only trying to help educate the importance of allowing these big fish to breed. Its also good Karma !!!! Rob I cannot agree more. In any case the 6-7 kg cob makes much better eating.

Ja I see this is rather touchy and for those who are truly mad about eating fish try Villa Mora,CTFM or Something Fishy.If you like to prepare it your self most of the chain stores have a very good fish section.Remember that omega three fatty acids which are available from fish like Salmon,sardine,mackerel,trout etc are far healthier.Anyway in closing lets try and make a difference on an individual level by trying to preserve our fish stocks and enjoy the holidays.
