Hey guys how are we all doing..

have a question..We normally go freshwater fishing at Zeekoevlei once a year..but we would like to go more often.. Now what happened the ast time was we released the fish..and just before we were packed up for the day, two guys came around to us and said that if we release the fish they will fine us R3000 p/f...now i would not normally take notice of this but they had ranger uniforms on... they said what we dont want we must leave at the gate...

My thinking is they trying to scare us into giving them the fish(instead of releasing) and then they sell it...

Thoughts?

I know that some ppl catch fish there and sell them to the Nigerians in Strandfontein rd and the rangers know of this. I've heard of catches being made of up to 20 fish per person fishing. Now my guess is that the rangers want u to give them the fish so they can then sell them

My suggestion would be to get the number of their offices, and speak to their supervisors first before you tell anyone to get knotted

Oh I would lol, but make sure they not busy with some management excersise first. Chances are the minute you ask the number for the supervisor they'll back right off

there are places where you not allowed to release the fish because the trying to get rid of as many as possible, I know they put a trek net into seekoeivlei every season to kill a few tons!

if it is an exotic speicies like bass or carp it is strictly speaking illegal to release the fish but the laws for fishing regulations are very outdated.

See Number (2) am i reading it incorrectly or does this give me permision to catch and release?

79. (1) No person shall place or release live fish in waters, unless he is the holder of a permit which authorizes him to do so.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1) any person who has caught a fish may thereafter place or release it alive in the waters in which he caught it.
(3) Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with subsection (1) shall be guilty of an offence.
